I look at quite a lot Kozuka and always wonder why the blade seem unpolished and sometime have quite a bit of patina on them. Was there a reason why? I know there were some that look perfect, but that was quite rare. Please educate me.

The knife was an all-purpose handy blade that could be used for anything and everything. They were frequently sharpened, which accounts for much of the variety in shapes found. The handle might be a work of art, but the blades were largely interchangeable. There would be no point in keeping it in perfect condition, unless you never had to do anything for yourself. Even so, genuine old blades are not cheap in the marketplace.
