atoshiko Posted October 29, 2021 Report Posted October 29, 2021 Hi! I was gifted this sword and would like some help with any info you guys have. It is claimed to have been taken as a souvenir and brought back to the US in WW2. Quote
Surfson Posted October 29, 2021 Report Posted October 29, 2021 Hard to make out. Maybe Seki Kaneshige. Do you have better photos? It has the "feel" of an arsenal blade, perhaps hand made. Quote
atoshiko Posted October 29, 2021 Author Report Posted October 29, 2021 Let me know what type of photos would be helpful Quote
Stephen Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Close up of saya finish and drag please. Yes Kaneyoshi Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Ashley, Your sword is known as a Type 98 Japanese Officer sword. The metal fittings seem to be of the upgraded style - fat seppa (spacers around the handguard) and patented drag at the end of the saya (scabbard). Like Stephen asked, a photo of that drag would confirm it. I'd love to get full length photos of both sides of the naked nakago (tang), spacers and handguard removed. This smith made a variety of blades and that can sometimes be determined by small stamps at the top of the nakago, and even on the back edge. He was a registered "RJT" smith, and a star stamp at the top would confirm this blade as traditionally made for the RJT program. His blades also are found with Showa or Seki stamps, or none at all. So full photos would help. Here's an example of the patented drag: 1 Quote
atoshiko Posted November 1, 2021 Author Report Posted November 1, 2021 Thank you for all the info Bruce! Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 1, 2021 Report Posted November 1, 2021 Hey Ashley, what's this: Is it a stamped "15" with chalk/powder in it? Quote
atoshiko Posted December 2, 2021 Author Report Posted December 2, 2021 Hi Bruce, I am not sure here is a closer photo Quote
DRDave Posted December 2, 2021 Report Posted December 2, 2021 Ashley, I think Bruce was asking about the other side. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 2, 2021 Report Posted December 2, 2021 Right, the other side. Looks like 2 dots, and maybe the number "15"? Quote
