Joseph P. Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 Hi guys, I recently obtained an old blade in not-so-good condition. There is some red rust on the nakago (and some flaky) and I would like to know how to get rid of it. I remember a long time ago, I read that you can use bone or ivory or something. The blade has some deep nicks all along the edge, so much that I'm not sure it could be repaired. So back onto topic, how do you get red rust off? Quote
stekemest Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 You can slightly rub the nakago with horn and some water or oil. Quote
Stephen Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 A light taping to with a small hammer to the flaky rust will remove it with out alot of rubbing. then just use a light coat of oil. no major rubbing you just want to stop the red rust. Quote
Joseph P. Posted February 14, 2009 Author Report Posted February 14, 2009 Thanks! Sounds good. :D Blade was abused severely, can't tell if the nicks are battle or just abuse. Pretty deep for a small wakizashi nonetheless. Quote
loiner1965 Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 pics would be most welcomed Quote

John A Stuart Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Joseph, Some swords just don't have what it takes to be worth restoring. This one may be such, loathe as I am to say it. Something to play with and see what pops up on your own, but, not worth putting any money into. It looks more like someone was chopping into steel to see what the edge can take and fatally damaged the blade. John Quote

The saya was once quality too, with remains of buffalo horn koiguchi, mother of pearl inlay (also where the kogatana or kogai would be, there is some mother of pearl), and nice, old lacquer. Quote
