gun addict Posted October 20, 2021 Report Posted October 20, 2021 This particular sword caused quite a commotion on Facebook today but I’ve been advised by experts that this one has all the traits of a Gimei including badly stamped Kikusu-mon whats the consensus of this board? Quote
Stephen Posted October 20, 2021 Report Posted October 20, 2021 His pix are bad your's much better....did you own it before? Quote
gun addict Posted October 20, 2021 Author Report Posted October 20, 2021 No Stephen it’s not mine. I asked him for more pictures and I guess it got better. Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted October 20, 2021 Report Posted October 20, 2021 My gut feeling says it looks unreliable Quote
Brian Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Don't like the placement or the way it was done. I'm no expert. But I wouldn't throw money at it. Looks added to me. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 His pics over there are better. I'm no mei expert, but I thought the mei was poorly cut, but then I've pooh pooh'ed poor mei before that turned out to be legit. The kikusui looks brand new, but then I think it was just cleaned by who ever did the polish. The date shows better over there too, and is corroded but could be Showa 11, 1936. Was the Shrine producing blades in '36? LINK TO OTHER THREAD Quote
vajo Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Im not sure that it is gimei. The kikusi mon looks sometimes a little bit loosy. from aio arts - yagumo yokota masatome 1 1 Quote
Edward Mahle Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 @vajo I agree, I'm sure slight differences from stamp to stamp is excepted. I'm sure it's not a 100% perfect process every time. But... I'm also a child in this realm so haha. 1 Quote
Stephen Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Its why we're not to be so quick to judge and make assumptions that we're not qualified to make. 3 Quote
Ed Harbulak Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Should the kikusui be on the date side of the nakago? I may be wrong, but I'd expect it to be above the maker's mei. Quote

Toryu2020 Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Well if Vajo has given us a valid example there are worlds of difference here - number one the finish of the nakago - kesho yasuri plus deeply cut sujikai versus kiri - the "hand" in Vajo's sample is simple wonderful, deep and flowing versus a rather clunky look to the makers name especially - the tsuki-hi looks almost sosho but that could be because the faker doesnt have to copy characters he writes everyday... The sword did sell so, good on him. -t Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 I’m not bothered by the kikusui. They weren’t stamped, they where each hand made. You can see many variations here: 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 21, 2021 Report Posted October 21, 2021 Outside smiths used the Kikusui that were unrelated to the shrine smiths: https://www.aoijapan.net/katana-minamoto-yoshichika-saku-kore/ 1 Quote
vajo Posted October 22, 2021 Report Posted October 22, 2021 Like all that swords there is a wide range of posibilities. Minatogawa swords are more rare than yasukuni-to. Many of that sword lay somewehre in the pacific. So it is not easy to compare that swords against each others. I'm honest - i didn't know if it is gimei or not. For what price is it gone? Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 22, 2021 Report Posted October 22, 2021 There are plenty of references for these, the ones with questions should be viewed with extreme caution. 1 Quote

Thanks Bruce I also want to add that in my Opinion the Mei is well chisseld and i cant see why someone say it is poorly made. Im not saying it is legit and im like others not an expert. 2 Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted October 22, 2021 Report Posted October 22, 2021 Compared to the Oshigata in Sloughs this is not a good match. My assumption is that this started its life way before the 1940s anfd is probably an altered Shinshinto blade .... 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 I was just notified by someone that he bought and paid for this sword and the seller has not been responsive since payment was sent. The sales posts of this sword have since been removed from Facebook. I am not making any accusations, but this is the individual who posted the sword for sale. https://www.facebook.com/michael.dumas.5283 Quote
Brian Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 Hmm. That doesn't sound good. FB link doesn't work. Has he ever posted here? Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 Hi Brian, I just found his post is still here: 1 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 He's still on FB doesn't seem to be hiding... -t Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 I had been offered this sword, too at 2k but then the seller disapperared. So I guess it is not necessarily a scam as he would have done his best to "sell" the sword to as many people as possible. So I keep my fingers crossed that your friend will receive the sword soon. My personal take on the sword is after a long study that it may be legit work by that smith but having had the mon added later on. The workmanship in the blade seems to be good and correct for the smith while teh signature is pretty different, especially the positioning of it. Would be nice if this went to someone knowledgeable who can come uop with a good oppinion on it. Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 The buyer just updated me that he heard back from Michael last night. And to add, the reason the buyer involved me was that the sword had been sold within a group I manage. Hopefully everything works out well for both parties moving forward. 2 Quote
crotalus358 Posted November 3, 2021 Report Posted November 3, 2021 Hello, All. I am the buyer of this sword; unfortunately, I do not have it in-hand to provide any more detail or information on it. I paid for said sword on Friday, October 22, 2021 and, to date, the seller, Michael Dumas, has not shipped the sword and continues to provide reasons why it has not been shipped. I have opened a claim with PayPal, as I paid via Goods & Services (highly recommended for dealing with unknown entities), and I have until the 16th of this month to escalate the claim. For anyone else that has been approached by this seller, I would recommend taking a look at my experiences herein and proceeding accordingly. Needless to say, a very aggravating situation to be in. I will gladly provide updates as the situation changes. Regards, Steve Quote
crotalus358 Posted November 3, 2021 Report Posted November 3, 2021 Update: Just received a FB message from Michael with a photo of the shipping receipt. Delivery is due to me by this Friday - I'll keep this thread updated. Special thanks to Ray Singer for his input and assistance on this issue. Regards, Steve 2 Quote
gun addict Posted November 6, 2021 Author Report Posted November 6, 2021 Steve, did you ever receive the sword and if so how is it ? Quote
crotalus358 Posted November 9, 2021 Report Posted November 9, 2021 I did receive it, but have not had time to take photos for the group due to work. As soon as I get some spare time, I'll post photos - hopefully today or tomorrow. Thanks! Steve Quote
