Butch Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 My first post on this forum A excellent condition Officers Shin Gunto Gendaito blade Katana made by Ishido Minamoto Teru Hide in March 1939. The sword has been in a long standing collection for about 50 years until the recent custodian passed away. The sword fittings are in fantastic condition and the days as the brown fish skin covering it also came with a brown mint leather handle cover. The last custodian always called it the Colonels sword but unfortunately there is no paper work to back this up. Gareth 5 1 Quote

Welcome aboard Gareth! I think the sword's name came via the color of the tassel. I see a second tang hole at the bottom so I would like to endorse Trystan's request for a full tang picture. Quote
Butch Posted September 30, 2021 Author Report Posted September 30, 2021 Thank you for the comment will take some pics tomorrow .. regarding the two holes found another Teruhide slightly earlier than this one with the exact two holes in the tang .. Gareth Quote
paul griff Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 Hello Gareth, Very nice sword and a nice find ,well done....I have a similar shin gunto with fish skin saya and custom fittings including a bronze tsuba that looks very similar to the one on your sword.... Regards, Paul... Quote
Butch Posted September 30, 2021 Author Report Posted September 30, 2021 Lol it’s staying this side of the pond !!!! But thank you .., the sword is so tight with all matching number fittings ... Gareth 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 Since this summer, and John @PNSSHOGUN's white ray skin saya, I've seen more Army rayskin saya than I've seen in the last 7 years on this board! They're coming out of the woodwork! Truly gorgeous Gareth! 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Very nice, shame any history with it has been lost. The tassel is in beautiful condition, along with the rest of the sword. These special Koshirae would've been expensive at the time for an army sword. I wonder how different the cost would've been between this sword and the same Kai Gunto with Samegawa saya? 1 Quote
Butch Posted October 1, 2021 Author Report Posted October 1, 2021 Here are some pics of the tang and fittings which are all the same numbers 1 Quote
IJASWORDS Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Tang photos are upside down. Can you invert them please, makes them easier to read, thanks. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 That is a long Mei, has it been fully translated? Might have the officers name in it. Quote
m4l700 Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Very nice sword Gareth! You can be proud to possess this work Keep in mind, this smith has nothing to do with the infamous Ishido Teruhide, they are not related. http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/teruhide.htm Quote
Butch Posted October 1, 2021 Author Report Posted October 1, 2021 Here they are the two together .. They have been together for at least fifty years 4 Quote
4 Quote

Most Ishido Teruhide blades we see are kind of mass produced for the army, not custom made, without a date. This particular ishido Teruhide in the above photos looks like a rare long Ishido Teruhide signature. Probably a custom made to order blade. 1 Quote
Butch Posted October 1, 2021 Author Report Posted October 1, 2021 Thanks for the kind comments Bruno , The Kai-Gunto blade is named to Noshu Ju Kane Nobu .. I will start a separate thread on the Kai-Gunto at a later date ... Gareth 1 Quote
