myochin Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Some of you may already know of the publication of Mr Burawoy's PhD - "Armuriers du Japon XVIe - XVIIe siècle". As the book is only available in French for the time being, there is now an English and a Japanese Abstract available for download. There is also a Corrigenda file with the latest corrections and updates. These files may be downloaded from the following link: http://www.gill.telmat-net.fr/ Paul. Quote
Brian Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Paul, Thanks for the info. Looks like a worthwhile book to own. Just wanted to clarify something. The English download is just a part of the book? If a part..then will there ever be a full English translation available? Btw..not to nitpick, but shouldn't those be extracts and not abstracts? Or they could be termed introductions I think. Regards, Brian Quote
myochin Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Hi Brian, An abstract is a condensed version of the original, giving the overall topo in a few pages. A résumé if you like. The original work is in French. Work is in progress for a full English version. The idea is to give an overview of the work for those who don't read French. Paul. Quote
Brian Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Paul, Never mind Japanese, looks like I need to brush up on my English I (and many others) would be very interested in a full English translation I am sure. Btw..since you are one of the armour guys here and I have been asked this recently...what would you consider as the most important books on Japanese armour to have in your library? (mainly in English) Brian Quote
myochin Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Difficult question Brian. I guess you are referring to non-Japanese text. There are the two books by Mr Burawoy on the Kôzu and Stibbert collection that include outstanding items with great information on the differents schools. Both books are dual language English-French: Kôzu: http://www.toriilinks-editions.com/en/en_cat_kozu.php Stibbert: http://www.toriilinks-editions.com/en/e ... ibbert.php There is also the book on the Galeno collection by Ian Bottomley. Other interesting books, for beginners: Arms & Armour of the Samurai Bottomley, Hopson Saturn books Japanese Arms & Armour HR Robinson Crown Publishers Inc Hope this helps. Paul. Quote
Brian Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks Paul, I have a few of those, but will have to complete the gaps. I also have THE MANUFACTURE OF ARMOUR & HELMETS IN 16th CENTURY Japan but don't know where that fits in, and whether it is considered a decent book or not. Brian Quote
myochin Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 I really don't have the experience to comment. Maybe Ian could suggest a good reading list. Paul. Quote
