Moley Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 Hi everybody, I have an Mino - Yahazu Midare Katana that has a very strange bump near the Mune maki. It dosn’t quite touch the habaki. Even though not exactly centered, it does have a ridge line. (or remnants of one) Any idea as to what it is? Quote

Shugyosha Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 Looks like it was put there to me - maybe to receive a catch mechanism? Looks too regular for a fukure to me, but not something I’ve seen before. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 Gwyn, to me it looks like a damaged MUNE MACHI (not MUNE MAKI). Although the photos are not perfect, I think I can see that the little offset is not at a right angle as it should be. This 'phenomenon' is certainly not deliberately made in the manufacture of the blade, but had occurred later. A little MACHI OKURI will have to be done to remove the flaw/defect. Quote
Sunny Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 Looks to me like someone used a small thin flathead and a hammer to pop a habaki off that was stuck. It bumped/slipped and went high due to being a very thin sharp tipped flathead but still caught pushing some of the metal forward. Or i could be very wrong. Quote
