Legal tender until the end of the Edo Period, they were easy to carry (in a secret slide in your saya for example) and exchange for cash coins for everyday purchases. The social and historical background is worth studying. Sadly, I gave half of them to my daughter some years ago, and the other half will probably go to the other one in due course.
