Hi Guys,

Once again I would like to ask for some valued opinions on this unpapered wak.

The flaw appears on one side only

The question - is this karasuguchi fatal? Are they all classified as fatal?

Thanks Simon

This is fatal

Greg

Ouch Greg, now that is a REAL bummer! the boshi could pop off with the slightest misplaced hit when handling the blade! :? looks like a good looking one too! :(

called tori nokuchi, see file of kizu

Your reference seems to be wrong.

The correct term for the flaw is Karasu-guchi (烏口). The first kanji is not Tori ( = bird) but Karasu ( = crow).

Thanks for the replies

I am hoping to put this blade into Shinsa in Sydney and was unsure.

Is it ok to submit blades with such a flaw ?

The blade is signed Etchu no kami Masatoshi.

How bad does the crack has to be in order to be fatal? The Google examples I assume are exaggerated and obviously FATAL. I just got a sword and didn't notice the flaw until I really inspected the blade at home.

Thanks,

Chris,

The interesting question is would a shinsa (I expect all organizations would have the same policy) pass a sword like this, or require the crack to be polished out before resubmitting?

I expect they would pass it, but curious.

I can't say with certainty what the NTHK-NPO would do. My best guess is they would pass it (provided everything else is kosher) but it would probably score low.

I can't speak for the other organizations.

To buy a sword with this defect, I would expect the price, to have an allowance for the remedial work to be costed in. That in itself could make a sale a non starter.

Unless this blade came to me at a ridiculous offer, I would pass on it. There is no shortage of no-trouble swords out there, even papered examples.

There is always a danger with buying swords, that are not in hand. It is a risk, there is no substitute for the buyer examination.

Chris pointing to the possibility of a low score on shinsa, answers well as to expected condition of any blade.

The blade did go to shinsa and received a score of 72. It was papered to Sandai Etchu no kami Masatoshi and shown as one of the best blades at the shinsa closing.

The flaw was never mentioned. :D

No mention of the flaw at all which is why I was pleased with the result.

Chris

I thought 72 was a good average score but maybe it was marked down due to the flaw?

I still enjoy alot.
