Hi all,

I recently acquired this wakizashi and thought I'd post some pics for comment. I actually posted elsewhere (translation assistance) regarding the nicely written sayagaki but thought that this is more general discussion. It is a Mino-den blade with a length of 43.9 cm and a sori of 1.6 cm. As mentioned elsewhere the sayagaki has it as suriage which is certainly not obvious. As for the mei I think it could be smith Kan1883 but I'm sure someone else will know better. Thus, any thoughts or comments are welcome.

I'm not in danger of becoming a professional photographer in the near future but I think these pics are fairly clear.

Also the shirasaya tsuka has disappeared which is not good news and I was hoping someone may be able to suggest a place where I could have another made, bearing in mind that I am in Germany.

Regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,

I can't tell you where in Germany to get a new tsuka but just in case you don't already know, be very careful with this sword until you do get a tsuka for it. Without a tsuka with mekugi, there is nothing but friction with the habaki holding the blade in place inside the saya. If the saya is bumped the blade can move down inside and chip it's kissaki on the saya bottom.

In the mean time, you might want to jerry rig something to limit the travel of the blade into the saya (2 sticks and a stout rubber band maybe?). Or does anyone have a better solution?

When shipping a blade with saya, but no tsuka I use a couple of pieces of 1"X2"-long enough to cover the nakaga and run a sheet rock screw through the mekugi-ana-securing the to "halves". you can then tape the 1X's for additional security.
