Hi all,

I recently came across an interesting, what seems to be 17 or 18 century Tachi type sword in custom made WOII mounting.

The saya cover in leather looks still amazing

Been looking for an old family sword (unfortunately it is not signed) that has been adapted to a WOII style for a while now so interested to purchase this.

just wanted to share and if you have thoughts on this, please share. Intersted to hear you opinion

best regards

Erwin

Seems to be just what you've described.  Without more photos, the nihonto guys won't be able to tell you more about the blade.  But it was re-fitted for the war.  The thin tsuba is often associated with the later war years.  Nice gunto if the price is right.

Dear Irwin.

Let's assume this is ubu, mumei and Shinto period.  If so then it is a katana not a tachi.  If it's what you are looking for then go for it.

All the best.

Hi Erwin,

Can't be sure from the few pictures you've posted but the sori may be unsually deep.  While some very early Nihonto had this sori, most I've seen outside of museums are later blades that have been retempered.  A side on picture of the whole blade without mounts may be helpful.

Thank you Bruce , always impressed by you response time……

I do not have the sword in possession yet so will certainly document it further if I decide to purchase it. We are a bit off from were he wants to land. Anyhow, food for thought

have a great day and wishing you well

Hi Grey, thank you for your reply and insights.

i have added a few additional pictures of the blade for reference. There is a pretty significant curve on it.

hope this helps, I can’t get more decent pictures until i decide to purchase it.

thank you so much for your insight

best regards

Hi Erwin,

The side on picture you just posted does show the sori; it isn't as pronounced as the earlier picture made it look.  Of course, retemper is always a possibility but, this sword could be OK.  If you decide to purchase you should ask for a 3 day inspection with right to return if necessary.

Cheers,  Grey

Thank you  Grey

The sword is not massively expensive i think for the way it looks now. In the Netherlands, private sales works really straight forward. You buy something and quarantee is untill the front door.

It intreques me so think I will just go for it

best regards and thank you for the advice.

best regards and have a great day,

Erwin
