Ed Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 I don't post often and generally avoid e-bay, but this morning while drinking coffee and having nothing better to do, I was cruising e-bay I ran across this. It gave me a good laugh, so I decided to share. http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-Japanese-SW ... 0321875925 The signature and date also received small hammer strokes to make it camouflaged. I 've never seen this before on a sword and it's not logical to erase inscriptions on an obvious Masamune school tang. I was told by a collcestor that it might have been due political reasons or to hide its value. Either way, it is a quality sword with a strange history needing to be solved. Seems this "obvious" Masamune school wak had the mei removed to hide it's value. That's something a lot of folks are guilty of, hiding the value of anything.
Jean Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Ed, One thing which should have been added is that the Mei was very professionally scratched It makes me think of what happened in France during the Revolution (1789 and on) on the Cathedrals'sculptures
Grey Doffin Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Actually, it isn't all that uncommon for the value of a Samurai sword to be purposefully disguised. I have a monumentally valuable katana that was disguised with kizu, ware, ha-giri, shin-tetsu, sai-ba, and numerous fukure in all the right places, as well as gi-mei. In fact, the disguise is so masterfully done that few, if any of you would be able to realize this sword for the true treasure it is. In case there is one among you who has the native intelligence to appreciate this gem, send gobs of money and it's yours. Grey
