James Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123 With the risk of being humiliated, I ask the question Who is this smith and why is the bidding at US$2500 with 6 days remaining? Quote
Nobody Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 If the mei is genuine, the sword was made by Kurihara Hikosaburo Akihide (栗原彦三郎昭秀) using Gunsui steel (群水鋼: Ref. http://www.nihontocraft.com/Gunsuihagane.html). Quote
James Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Oh yes yes you are right of course. I thought it was 照秀 not 昭秀 That explains it... Quote
bdgrange Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 This is a different signature than what I am used to or that I have witnessed. This was perhaps signed by a student, or daimei. The rust looks unusual and may be due to the carbon content of the steel. Just observations. Akihide is a respected smith and I would be happy to own this to study. Bill delagrange Quote

huntershooter Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Well............ there's gunto and then there's gunto by Kurihara Hikosaburo/"AkiHide". There is a book about him (unfortunately in Japanese only) "The Man Who Revived the Japanese Sword Twice". It is my understanding he is held in high esteem in Japan and his swords have increased significantly in value. I would assume along the lines of Yasukunito after Mr. Kishida's book came out. Quote
bdgrange Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Here is one example of the well made perhaps special order.http://www.nihonto.com/2.7.07.html bdgrange Quote
