Repairing Split Saya

Requesting some guidance on how to repair a split saya. My nihonto arrived from Japan and the saya unfortunately split on both ends where it was bonded together. I could use wood glue but wanted to see what others recommend since I prefer traditional preservation methods.

The glue used originally has nothing to do with glue as we know it. Yes, you can use anything to repair it but I wouldn't. Chemicals might have a negative impact on the blade itself and then some. I think the forum has info on qualified Saya makers within the US. I HIGHLY recommend going that route.

I thought they were put together with ‘ rice glue ‘ that I thought was made from no other than rice. I think that I even watched a video of how to make it. I am sure someone else will set this straight. Good luck

Hi Michael,

This needs to be done by someone with proper knowledge/training; I'm nearly 50 years a furniture maker and I wouldn't take this on.  You could approach John Tirado, Brisn Tsernega (sure I spelled that wrong), or send it to Bob Benson (check links above).

I would say you ask them for a new one.

Best get a professional tp mend it. Not only does it need to be glued but the koiguchi needs to be replaced. Its a nice saya I hope you get back to its former glory.
