French nihonto Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 A blade on sale at the moment on a french site, I thought that it could be interestingw I have translated the description to you, what do you think? Quote
Gakusee Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 This was for sale less than a year ago for a fraction of the price 3 Quote
French nihonto Posted June 1, 2021 Author Report Posted June 1, 2021 this post is not very interesting if everyone knows this blade, sorry. despite that, pretty speculation then ... Quote
Jacques Posted June 1, 2021 Report Posted June 1, 2021 Very expensive for a chu-jo saku, if it is really a gift from the emperor, he must not have had a great esteem for the general Claudel... 1 Quote
Rivkin Posted June 1, 2021 Report Posted June 1, 2021 Sword gifts were common for Meiji and there are plenty of examples with solid provenance in museums. Most have the mounts similar to the one shown, the blades are usually average. There are frankly almost no western collections formed in Meiji period with good blades, Boston MFA being an exception. Period collectors and dignitaries also had aversion to shirasaya, so such pieces were usually not gifted at any level. Quote
Surfson Posted June 7, 2021 Report Posted June 7, 2021 Yes, this was offered at an auction in Paris a while back. I tried to register to bid, but the auction house was pretty unhelpful and uncommunicative. It seems more expensive now. 1 Quote
French nihonto Posted June 7, 2021 Author Report Posted June 7, 2021 apparently the blade was sold for € 33,000, the question is, good or bad deal? Quote
Volker62 Posted June 7, 2021 Report Posted June 7, 2021 I know of a Gassan Sadakazu Tachi , that was in my Hands, here in Germany the Koshirae is very similar... it was found in East Germany from a German collector Dealer from Bremen in 2000-2001... A dream like sword Quote
Volker62 Posted June 7, 2021 Report Posted June 7, 2021 According to my research this Gassan tachi was much more expensive.... the fund price was 8,000.00 German brands Quote
Volker62 Posted June 7, 2021 Report Posted June 7, 2021 8,000.00 German Mark was very lowfor a sword like this the blade was original a bid rusty and buffed.... Quote
vajo Posted June 7, 2021 Report Posted June 7, 2021 Much cheaper here Katana in Tachi Montierung - eGun These koshirae are often faked. I didn't know if that koshirae in the french offer is a genuine one but the Haller Company sold it often. Quote
