Subarist Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 Hi! I need help identify this sword What it said to the blade and sheath. Is it a real sword or just for show? Why it has number on the blade? Thank you. Quote
Brian Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 It's so bad, I think this one is a copy of a bad fake. 1 Quote

16k Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 Yes, a very bad repro, unfortunately. Chinese made most probably. Quote
JH Lee Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 I prefer the term "craptana" myself... 🤔 2 Quote
Subarist Posted May 25, 2021 Author Report Posted May 25, 2021 How about this one? Cost around 60$ Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 At $60 you know the answer already. There’s a list of dealers with genuine Japanese swords in the links section at the top of the page. Look at what’s for sale and compare those items and prices with the examples you’ve shown here. The best advice is to spend some time and maybe some money on educating yourself and ultimately buy from a reputable dealer or from the sales section on here. You’re swimming with the sharks right now. 2 1 Quote
Brian Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 I wouldn't discount it completely just yet. Looks like a homemade and amateur shirasaya/tsuka.....but isn't it Kashu (I think) swords that are often signed on the blade and not nakago? This one looks like it may possibly be real. Post the blade in the translation section, vertically. Let's see if it reads anything. It could go either way. 1 Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 Have a flick down this blog. Apparently Kiku Ichimonji are a firm of Japanese cutlers founded after the ban on wearing swords and it looks like they make replicas. http://vintagenihonto.blogspot.com/2015/10/?m=1 1 Quote

Mark S. Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 And just for future reference, until you know the blades aren’t real, laying them on rocks for pictures won’t do them any favors. If these are the seller’s pictures, that should tell you a lot... Quote
ChrisW Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 Trust the advice of these gentlemen! They have years of shared knowledge and won't steer you wrong! Study up here, buy books, meet with collectors and examine their collections. THEN start looking for an entry-level piece here or on one of the respected dealer sites mentioned here. Stay away from eBay and big online "antique" stores! Quote
Marius Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 As for the second sword - to determine if it is real, you need to remove the handle to let us see the nakago (tang). First, remove the pin from the handle (if there is any) Then remove the balde from the handle (do not do it bu grabbing and pulling the blade) Here is a tutorial how to do it: 1 Quote
