Hello, I'm glad I found this forum and it has been a fountain of information. I'm trying to wrap my head around this inscription which I'm thinking is gimei. Thank you for any assistance.

You might want to post more pictures of the blade itself, kissaki to nakago, full length without the habaki. Etc. Try to capture the hamon and hada if possible. All of these things will help in determining the veracity of the mei. Honestly, to me, judging from the patination, it doesn't look like a gunto. Looks older. But that is impossible to verify without more pictures of the blade.

Thanks for the reply, here's the picture of the full nakago and full blade, pics aren't very good, my apologies. I was trying my luck at comparing the top kanji to a chart and all I came up with is "daijo", which I'm sure is wrong knowing my ability to read these. I'm a rank beginner at this, but it looks like osuriage and the mei added after modification.

Definitely not a gunto blade. This is a traditionally made blade mounted in a gunto koshirae. Looks war-time done, the blade's patination on the nakago and shape make it at least 300 years old. But that's just a ballpark. Its a two-kanji signature. As for what it says? Could be anything, there's a lot of two-kanji mei out there.

Looks to be in decent shape. I always love gunto koshirae.
