Javi E Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 hi all, need your opinions on this sword, the seller says it could be a shinto sword, i have no idea about it. whats your opinion? what period? the blade its in very good condition about 90% condition i think. thanks. Quote
drbvac Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Well it could be shinto from the appearance of the rust on the nakago but it does look a little funny just in front of the mekugiana, like it changes direction and is pinched and the area that would be under the habaki. I always hate to speculate on photos alone, and I sure there are lots of folks on here that are better at this than I! The mounts look pretty good Quote
Javi E Posted January 8, 2009 Author Report Posted January 8, 2009 thanks for your opinion Brian? why do you say it´s funny? haha thanks for your reply, all other opinions are welcome Quote
drbvac Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 About 3/4 inch in front of the mekugiana, the nakago seems like it may have been welded on or attatched at that point. The line of the blade seems to flow down to that area and then it seems to change direction where it is pinched in but maybe I am being paranoid. There are lots out there that know more than I but I thought I would give ti a comment. Perhaps they are concerned if you are looking for opinions for purchase or sale - dont know! Quote
Brian Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 No, I think the nakago is ok, with age wear and rust. I don't see any problems there. I guess the lack of replies comes down to the fact that what you have there is a Japanese sword, real and older than WW2. That's about all I can say. There isn't much to go on. You can't really get an accurate age or school from it in that state. I suggest if you like it, and the price is right, then go for it. I think the handle is maybe rewrapped at some stage, but that isn't serious. It just isn't possible to look at pics online and make accurate guesses as to all the info usually. That relies on all the subtle details such as hamon, hada etc. Brian Quote
Javi E Posted January 9, 2009 Author Report Posted January 9, 2009 thanks for your opinions, what a pity to don´t know the age. thanks Quote
Javi E Posted January 9, 2009 Author Report Posted January 9, 2009 here is one more photo, perhaps this could help but i´m not sure. Quote
Stephen Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Javi think Brian hit the nail on the head if the sword speaks to you go for it, we all know the seller (used to be blue carpet background) and if he thinks the blade is older its a good chance it is. Quote
