paulb Posted April 29, 2021 Report Posted April 29, 2021 I am the first to admit that my translating abilities are poor at best but I think for this one I have reasonable excuse. Can anyone help decipher the image below please? Quote
SteveM Posted April 29, 2021 Report Posted April 29, 2021 Left side: 手柄山丹霞 Tegarayama Tanga Right side is throwing me. One would expect Masashige-saku, but it's not Masashige. Possibly 駿岱作 , which is found on other Masashige swords, but that is said more in desperation rather than a sober look at the characters. 1 Quote
SteveM Posted April 29, 2021 Report Posted April 29, 2021 Could also be Ujishige 2nd, who used 丹霞 (Tanga) in his mei. Masashige (his son) used 丹霞斎 (Tangasai) as an art name. So, I'm leaning towards Ujishige. But it still doesn't help me with the reverse side of the nakago. Can we get a look at the sword? Not that that will help figure out the mei, but I'm expecting it is a very nice sword. 5 Quote

Nobody Posted April 30, 2021 Report Posted April 30, 2021 That may be 男良俊 on the reverse side, though I am a little unsure about 良. I am also unsure about its reading. Otoko, Yoshitoshi/Ryoshun? The following material shows that 良俊 is a son of Ujishige II, and he carved horimono on the blade. The wakizasi No.7 has a mei 男良俊彫之. Wakizashi No.7 Ref. 美術館刀剣8P (tm-office.co.jp) 4 Quote
paulb Posted April 30, 2021 Author Report Posted April 30, 2021 Many thanks Koichi-san I have passed your answer on to the person who is investigating the sword. Quote
