Harry Posted April 23, 2021 Report Posted April 23, 2021 This is the first time I have seen the word “raid” used to describe a blade flaw. Anyone know what that refers to? Is it generally considered fatal? harry Quote
Mark S. Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 Have no idea what you are referring to? Quote
Harry Posted April 24, 2021 Author Report Posted April 24, 2021 It may have been a spellcheck error. Here is how it was used and the blade it describes. ”It has scratches and a raid related to the passage of time” Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 Bill Gates cleverly makes it completely impossible to guess the original meaning. Quote
Guido Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 I tried the other way around, and looked it up in my English to Japanese dictionary - one possible translation of “raid” is kirikomi ... 4 1 2 Quote

francois2605 Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 Because the sentence ends with "related to the passage of time", I think the person meant "wear". Or maybe "ware" ? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 If we had the original Japanese website then it should be easy to sort definitively. 1 Quote
Harry Posted April 24, 2021 Author Report Posted April 24, 2021 I bought the blade and will post photos when it arrives. Thanks everyone for your help. harry Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 25, 2021 Report Posted April 25, 2021 More fun wordplay! ‘a raid’ = abrade, abraded, abrasions, scuffs...? 1 Quote
Harry Posted May 25, 2021 Author Report Posted May 25, 2021 Apologies for the delay. Here are photos of that blade. No red flags that I can see, but I am a novice at this, so I probably wouldn’t see “a red flag” unless it was taped to my forehead. I welcome and appreciate comments. I like my whiskey straight so please don’t hold back. TIA! harry Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 Hi Harry, Looks like it’s been shortened from a longer blade and not sympathetically from the look of the tang. Someone has had a go at an amateur polish: the shinogi is wobbly and it used to have a yokote which has practically been blurred out. I can’t tell from the photos if the hamon is intact but whatever has been done with the polish has killed it aesthetically. Maybe an acid etch to bring it out after the buffer had killed it. Honestly, you’re better off keeping your money in your pocket. Straight enough?? 2 Quote

Properly trained togishi will tell you that acid bites into the metal and can render an otherwise good sword to be not worth the cost of a polish. BaZZa. (Hoping this is worth preserving!!!) 1 Quote
