Itomagoi Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Hi all, I found this unusual Gunto Koshirae on ebay. Have any of you seen one of these before? At first I thought fake, but the quality seems to be good. https://www.ebay.com/itm/254950739881?hash=item3b5c3f8fa9:g:dUcAAOSwq0pggDAY 2 Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Hi Peter , I have one of these . This is only the second one that I have seen . The tsuba on mine is different though . I had previously asked Richard Fuller and Jim Dawson if they had ever seen one and they hadn't, so it is a pretty rare item . I had assumed that mine was unique until I saw your post . A photo of the kabuto gane is attached . Ian Brooks 3 Quote
lonely panet Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 ohhh and its a yasumitsu, it just gets better Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 The tassel on the ebay one is a replica. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 The one on fleabay seems to have a zoheito in it. This is quite an interesting development. They seem too well crafted for the average fake operation. And if a faker, why create a pattern that doesn't even try to emulate the IJA patterns (except for the tsuba)? Most fakes try to copy the military fittings. I don't know what we're looking at, but it doesn't seem faked. Quote
ChrisAWilson Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 I do like that, seems a lot higher quality fittings than your normal 98s, wonder is these were special order or custom made . Glad you posted these as If I'd seen them somewhere I'd of assumed they were fakes or civilian mounts of some kind. I really like that design its reminiscent of an old Tachi in my opinion, more so than the standard 98s. 1 Quote

My comment about you being fired was located here but I deleted it just to be on the safe side! Quote WW2 Japanese Gunto sword (note: the blade is not real, to comply with Japanese sword regulations) This is a fine example of a 2nd World War Japanese Gunto sword. Very nice for display, or can be used for parts. It'd be a shame, but why not. Again, the blade, is made of steel, looks like it has a hamon (temper line) but does not cut. It's just for show. Provenance: estate sale. It's in very good condition. Quote

So, it begs the question then - who put that blade in there and why? 1 Quote

DTM72 Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Someone must have liked it. She is sold. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Yes, I considered buying it but prefer not to have Koshirae without blades now. Good catch for whoever bought it. Quote
Itomagoi Posted April 23, 2021 Author Report Posted April 23, 2021 I have not bought this koshirae. I wanted in the first place to collect information about it. I it still so many things unknown in the field of Gunto. Therefore, I like to learn more and more. :-) Quote
Itomagoi Posted May 3, 2021 Author Report Posted May 3, 2021 I found this gunto with an unusual kojiri. Has anyone seen one of these? Are there any other examples? Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted May 3, 2021 Report Posted May 3, 2021 Post war replacement, you can see where the original was. 3 Quote

Itomagoi Posted August 3, 2021 Author Report Posted August 3, 2021 There is always something new to discover at gunto world. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted August 3, 2021 Report Posted August 3, 2021 Sorry but that looks like total crap. Quote
Itomagoi Posted August 3, 2021 Author Report Posted August 3, 2021 I agree with you there. But it's still interesting to find something like that. :-) Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 3, 2021 Report Posted August 3, 2021 Peter, Your thread, and detective work, need to be transferred to the "Fake Swords" thread in the Gallery! You are finding some real doozies! Looks new, but with artificially aged fittings. See the chemical marks around the edges of the seppa? The other metal parts are clearly treated as well to age them. The habaki and tsuba have marks on them to make them look used/aged. The thinness of the metal parts is another give-away. Quote
Itomagoi Posted August 3, 2021 Author Report Posted August 3, 2021 Bruce, your are right. It makes more sense to move it to the fake category. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 3, 2021 Report Posted August 3, 2021 Actually wouldn’t have to move the thread, still useful for education. Simply post the photos in the gallery as examples. Quote
