One question that might have been discussed already:

We probably all agree that there aren't many jems still hidden around that are capable of reaching the above tokubetso juyo levels But if one is presented to shinsa, what would happen to it? Please do tell.

Impossible John, Tokubetsu Juyo does not exist in NTHK system. We are talking of NTHK American Shinsa. In NTHK system, the highest grades are granted only in Japan.

Thank you very much but theoretically if it's submitted to NBTHK, would it be held in Japan and would they take ownership or offer to purchase if it turns out to be that valuable?

My dear friend has an extremely important one that comes with provenance and it's been published in numerous books so we wonder what is the best way to get the papers for it??? I am trying to get him to send me photos but he is just waay too private :/

Correct me if I am wrong but the NTHK is great to technically just confirm its authenticity??

Final Q, is Yushuto equal to Juyo or is it an unfair comparison?

Thank you

NBTHK holds shinsa only in Japan. You have to get first TH to go for Juyo and then Juyo to go for Tokubetsu Juyo. Each time it is 10% of TH blades which are good enough to try Juyo shinsa out of which 10% will pass. Same applies for going from Juyo to Tokubetsu Juyo.

Japanese keeping blades is urban legend. NBTHK is an association and as an association delivers only appraisal certificates, they don’t buy or sell swords.
Go to Japan and visit dealers. You’ll be surprised to see how many Tokubetsu Juyo blades are held in their vaults.

It is not because a blade is published that it is a national treasure and worth million.

your friend has to go through the different shinsa level to see what it is worth (as an Art object and not value)

Yushu does not equal juyo because the selection criteria are not the same.

Thank you for the information.  My (and his concern) is whether an art object will be held IF it is of such importance... And I am more than positive that there are many TJ held there and then some. His approach is to get it classified as highly as possible for the sake of the provenance - doubt he needs money :)

Also, I have never submitted anything to Japan yet so I know nothing about the process. Most of our specimens do Not have registration cards so that might complicate things further. In few words, we are trying to find the quickest and safest way to get them registered and authenticated by NBTHK or NTHK whenever the CoVID madness is over.

Would you recommend hiring the well known names for the NBTHK process or just register and do it ourselves?

Thank you again for your patience and insight

Take someone in Japan as my friends, Robert Hughes or Paul Martin to go through shinsa process.

ABOVE ALL, STOP DREAMING Japanese AUTHORITIES CONFISCATING YOUR SWORD AS NATIONAL TREASURE. IT IS WISHFUL DREAMING.

BTW, all the TJ in dealers’ vaults I mentionned are for sale.

Usually organizers of shinsa in the US do accept mail in swords for an additional 100 or 150$ per item. That's the easiest way. Alternatively you can send a blade to an agent in Japan who will paper it for you.

99% of what people think is really important turns out to be fake junk. Unfortunately.

Regarding confiscation worries, I would avoid sending chokuto and chokuto koshirae. With the rest, few have the relevant experience. Maaaaybe there is an issue if its something along the lines of the earliest known signed and dated Bizen or signed ubu Munechika. Everything else is of little concern.

I believe it is nothing but normal to ask about it in case we have never been through the process.  It was only a question, no dreaming here!

Thank you

Understood. I am more than positive what we own as a whole is far from junk But time will show. Based on everything I have understood so far it is best to go to SF and see what is what. If the scores from the shinsa are good we may pursue it further. Appreciated

Just a little correct. NBTHK is  not an association but is an agency of the Japanese government; it depends of the Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency.  NTHK is an association.

swords are evaluated on their quality and given an assigned number - better than 85 would be something really special and the team would recommend the blade be sent to Japan for Yushu Shinsa. There have been a number of such blades come thru our shinsa and based on our appraisal we know that some have gone to Japan for full restoration and NBTHK papers. So it does happen. We do have a mail-in service and a FAQ page on our website...

Just sent in my reservations last week for the NTHK shinsa. Looking forward to the show and the shinsa. Thanks Tom for your efforts to set up the shinsa this year and passed years.

Kind of a newbie question here but can a sword out of polish be submitted for shinsa? I was thinking of submitting the below blade. However, it has some rust and is out of polish. Would I be just wasting time and money submitting this?

Jonathan -

Actually your sword appears right on the borderline based on these photos - there seems to be enough hamon, what needs to be seen is the jigane. If that is visible in the right light then an attribution can be made. Based on the photos we have seen worse and while the rule is generally that registration fees are non-refundable if the team deems a blade "unreadable" we always return the fee...

Thanks Thomas,

Yeah the hamon is definitely discernable in the right light, except when you get to the boshi which is obscured by some rust. However, I have not been able to see any jigane/jihada for the life of me. Maybe its just my untrained eyes, but I'm afraid it would be a deal breaker for shinsa.

If youre coming up for the sword show - bring us the blade - I can have the team preview it and advise you whether or not to submit...

I might just do that. Being located in LA I probably wont get a better opportunity to do so. I also have some other blades I could submit as well.
Is there a FAQ page for shinsa here on NMB? I have lots of other small questions regarding shinsa that I would rather not further clog up the board with.

Jonathan -

Please visit our webpages - there is a FAQ - if you still have questions please ask away - there are sure to be others here reading who have questions as well...

A message from the

Nihon Token Hozon-kai

To our members and loyal supporters –

It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of the 2021 NTHK West Coast Shinsa. It makes me sick to my stomach to have to report this but while the shinsa team members are all vaccinated and ready to travel, the Japanese government has placed restrictions on their nationals abroad that represent a hardship for the team. We are making plans for a 2022 Shinsa and will share that with everyone once details are finalized. In the meantime if you have registered already, rest assured registration monies will be refunded in short order.

Sadly no shinsa this year but big things still happening...

Please note the NBTHK/AB is scheduled to present five! Juyo blades representing the five main schools of the Yamato-den. In addition a very special presentation of kodogu will be on display.
"At the San Francisco show coming up will be an OUTSTANDING display for study put on by the NBTHK-AB of Goto Ichijo and Ichinomiya Nagatsune fittings it will be the best display ever put on in the USA of their works I believe all of the Nagatsune are examples in his sketch book and most of the Ichijo are in the original boxes from Ichijo when he made them for the original buyer!
If you are a Kodogu person or just want to see the best of the best, come the the show and see the display, as a grouping like this will not be put together again !!!!!!"
