Infinite_Wisdumb Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 Check out this one! https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/100583113_antique-tanto Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 It is a zaimei Shitahara Masamune. I know the sword well, it is owned here I Miami. The description is accurate, indicating that the blade is Shitahara Masamune (not the famous mainline early Soshu Masamune). 2 Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 Sayagaki reads Musashi no kuni ju Shitahara Masamune saku. Kanteisho reads Masamune (Shitahara) 2 Quote

Looks like a lot of forging flaws to me, is that assumption correct @Ray Singer Quote

I don't think there is a mystery to be solved, the description of the tanto that was written down on the page is accurate. It is tired in places, the jitetsu is worn and there is shingane showing. The seller is honest and I am sure he will send additional detail photos if requested. 3 Quote
Infinite_Wisdumb Posted April 7, 2021 Author Report Posted April 7, 2021 Dont disagree @Ray Singer Interested to see what it goes for Quote
Brian Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 Wasn't disputing the facts presented. There is no deception there. I just think the masterfully written sayagaki leaves a lot to be desired. But the seller isn't trying to misrepresent anything. 1 Quote
PietroParis Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 Except for a typo (?) in which the NTHK certificate becomes NBTHK Quote
Jean Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 Curious description as generally tanto don’t have shingane Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 I tend to encounter a number of tanto with shingane present. I was actually just handling this one a few ago, which is a wonderful piece for the intact Nanbokucho date (and also special for having been in the collection of our friend Arnold Frenzel). But as shown in the photos about 60%+ of the ji displays shingane. The Shitahara Masamune is about the same. http://www.nihontocraft.com/Bizen_Yukimitsu_Tanto.htm 1 Quote
Brian Posted April 8, 2021 Report Posted April 8, 2021 I have an old tanto signed Nobuyoshi showing shingane, that is clearly "tired" so I think that belief is a generalization with many exceptions. Quote
O koumori Posted April 8, 2021 Report Posted April 8, 2021 On Robert Cole's website Sho-shin, he describes Chikashige 1, the founder of Shitahara, as "Musashi Masamune." http://www.sho-shin.com/tokai8.htm Different smiths? Thanks, Dan Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 8, 2021 Report Posted April 8, 2021 What I believe is being said is a nickname indicating the respect that the smith had, such as Kiyomaro being called "Yotsuya Masamune" and Shinkai referred to as "Osaka Masamune". Frankly, I've never heard the nickname "Musashi Masamune" attached to anything other than the name of a famous blade by Soshu Masamune, so I am not sure where Robert's reference comes from. Quote
