PNSSHOGUN Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 Seeking a good condition Koa Isshin Mantetsu in early mounts (pierced Tsuba, gloss Saya etc) from 1938/39. Budget flexible for right example. This sword is a good example: https://www.aoijapan.net/gunto-koa-issin-mantetsu-sakusyowa-kiuharu-1939/
Kiipu Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 These early Mantetsu swords used a thicker crossguard [tsuba] than the later ones so keep your eyes open for this detail. BangBangSan noted this feature previously in another thread. Looking at the pictures more closely, the sarute opening is off-center on one side. Could this be a two-piece kabutogane like on the early Type 94s that you noted in another thread? Now I am curious about this sword as to how the kabutogane is held on?
PNSSHOGUN Posted April 20, 2021 Author Report Posted April 20, 2021 Yes, an early style Kabutogane where the Sarute barrel is not attached. From what I can tell it is attached via friction or glue, the Sarute barrel stops it coming off completely.
