Stragus Posted March 9, 2021 Report Posted March 9, 2021 Good evening everyone, I believe this is a typical story. My grandfather served in the pacific and brought home a sword that my grandmother claimed to be a Japanese cavalry sabre that he had pulled off an officer. The sword is heavily blackened and corroded, so I'm not able to make out two many details. The second sword was purchased by my parents at an auction in the early 90's for a handful of dollars. The second is in much better condition, but the design significantly less. I'm not sure if it's poor craftmanship, a fake, or just worn down from use. Attached are the pictures I could get. Please ignore the cheap stand, as my wife insisted I display them. Thank you for any advice you all can give. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 9, 2021 Report Posted March 9, 2021 Both Type 19 Kyu Gunto parade sabres. Depending on rank the back of the handle would be decorated, these are Company Grade so Lieutenant-Captain. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted March 9, 2021 Report Posted March 9, 2021 They're both mass-produced stamped metal blades. The edge you see on them is etched and they were chrome-plated as well. One has lost its plating almost entirely. They weren't made poorly, but these were made for parade purposes not combat (they could be used for combat in a pinch as could anything though! but unlikely.) Quote
