DTM72 Posted February 25, 2021 Report Posted February 25, 2021 I've been trying to contact Lohman for some buffalo horn pieces and replacement kozuka blades, but I'm getting no replies to emails or phone messages. Have they closed-up shop? Quote
Ed Harbulak Posted February 25, 2021 Report Posted February 25, 2021 Fred had some medical problems a few months ago and his son was filling in for him, but I don't know what the situation is now. Quote

SAS Posted February 25, 2021 Report Posted February 25, 2021 Namikawa Heibei has been very responsive when i ordered supplies, never had an issue. 1 1 Quote
jeremy Posted February 26, 2021 Report Posted February 26, 2021 I second namikawa Heibei. Bought a few things from them in the past, and they're very responsive and great to deal with. 1 2 Quote

It is worth remembering that a lot of the better quality "local to you" dealers buy from Namikawa and then sell on to you with a markup. 2 Quote

Toryu2020 Posted February 27, 2021 Report Posted February 27, 2021 Fred is not able to operate the shop right now - his son is doing his best but when I spoke to him last week he admitted he has a huge backlog of emails and orders he is trying to get thru. He promises he is going to try to respond to everyone. -t 1 Quote
Stephen Posted February 27, 2021 Report Posted February 27, 2021 I edited the link seems his account was hacked sorry for any inconvenience Quote

Hi Dave From memory they don't use PayPal which is something to think about. Unless they have changed that. But I used my credit card to purchase from them Quote

My last two purchases from them, Nurizaya Wood for a Wakizashi and 100g Uchiko Powder were both paid for via Pay Pal, and very easy transactions they were indeed. Quote

DTM72 Posted February 27, 2021 Author Report Posted February 27, 2021 Going through some of my old reference material last night, I found a 1999 catalog from Fred Lohman and also a 2001 D.R. Langenbacker reproduction Tsuba catalog. Damn, I'm getting old. 2 Quote

MarcoUdin Posted February 28, 2021 Report Posted February 28, 2021 I messaged fred lohman a few weeks ago and got a reply after my second time trying. He was quick to apologize on the delay and is in operation. 3 Quote
izo1984 Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 I read on FaceBook that Fred passed away. Is this true? 3 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 True - his son Chris has taken over the business but it is not his full time job - if you are waiting for work to be done he has many "back-orders" to get caught up on so response time may be long... -t 2 Quote
b.hennick Posted July 2, 2021 Report Posted July 2, 2021 I'm sad to hear that Fred Lohman has died. He provided the nihonto community with good reasonably priced things for many years. 2 2 Quote
Brian Posted July 2, 2021 Report Posted July 2, 2021 Sad, I wonder why this wasn't bigger news in the community. RIP and condolences to his friends and family. 3 1 Quote
Guido Posted July 2, 2021 Report Posted July 2, 2021 Fred was quite a character. I met him for the first time in the late 80‘s while shopping at Namikawa Heibei in Tokyo, and where he was doing some business. I later gave him a ride back to the station, and we exchanged addresses and phone numbers. Imagine my surprise when he sent me a first edition of Shinkichi Hara’s “Schwertzierraten” as a thank you a few weeks later! We occasionally met when he was in Tokyo, and I always had some interesting conversations with him (if I managed to steer him away from topics like politics and kinky sex ). RIP, Fred! 5 1 Quote
