Hello,

I have no idea what school this tsuba could be.

The patern show an Oni and holly leaves. Do you know if it is related to  legend or a particular theme ?
If you have an opinion, I would love to hear it

Hi Sebastien,
no clear idea about the school. The theme is called iwashi no atama (鰯の頭 - sardine heads) and refers to a ceremony of driving out evil spirits. During Setsubun (the day before the beginning of spring) some families put up small decorations of sardine heads and holly leaves on their house entrances so that bad spirits will not enter.

Many thanks Mauro, these informations are very interesting ! :)

I wasn't aware of this ceremony. I wondered why there is a fish head, but make sense now with your explanation !

Regarding the school, what about Mito ?!

Thanks

Hiragi-iwashi hangs on the door and the dog comes to sniff. Wasn't the European holly a talisman tree in the West?
This custom is found in Kyoto, Osaka, Edo and Aizu. The punch marks around nakago-hitu may be close to Aizu-Shoami.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't thought to Aizu Shoami school because the workmanship is not so close of they usual works, but why not ?! Shoami styles are so large !

I will try to see if I found something similar or close in that school.

Thanks again

I own 2 nice aizu shoami tsuba but for this one I didn't recognize the aizu shoami style, that's why I requested opinion.

I notice the one you share has same "grid" design. So could be a possibility, but always hard to compare kinko with iron.

Anyway thanks again for your input. I appreciate :)

I like the Japanese idea of driving out evil spirits with sardines - but I think my idea will drive next doors cats away as well! I couldn't find any Holly so went for a garland of Japanese maple branches. :freak:

I know of two sets of daisho as well. The set here is described as Bushu also, but has no signature - so it may be a guess.

I think we have hijacked this thread :offtopic:

No it is not a Christian cross on that guard, not even an orthodox cross. Tea room windows?

Seller is trying too hard - nothing wrong with what it really represents. [Yas, you are right she is a glutton!]

Thanks Dale, that's a great find. Moreover this daisho has a mei that seems to be Umetada.

That give me a direction to do further research in the umedata school.

Many thanks

Hello,

Thanks for pointing out Umetada school.

I found this tsuba in wakayama, from Umetada school too. It show some similarities in the mimi and dot inlay. So Umetada seems to be a good call for my tsuba. :)
