Gunome Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 Hello, I have no idea what school this tsuba could be. The patern show an Oni and holly leaves. Do you know if it is related to legend or a particular theme ? If you have an opinion, I would love to hear it Quote
MauroP Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 Hi Sebastien, no clear idea about the school. The theme is called iwashi no atama (鰯の頭 - sardine heads) and refers to a ceremony of driving out evil spirits. During Setsubun (the day before the beginning of spring) some families put up small decorations of sardine heads and holly leaves on their house entrances so that bad spirits will not enter. Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 Sorry but after a few days the smell would probably keep most things away - maybe not cats? 2 Quote
Gunome Posted January 22, 2021 Author Report Posted January 22, 2021 Many thanks Mauro, these informations are very interesting ! I wasn't aware of this ceremony. I wondered why there is a fish head, but make sense now with your explanation ! Regarding the school, what about Mito ?! Thanks Quote
Yasaka Azuma Posted January 23, 2021 Report Posted January 23, 2021 Hiragi-iwashi hangs on the door and the dog comes to sniff. Wasn't the European holly a talisman tree in the West? This custom is found in Kyoto, Osaka, Edo and Aizu. The punch marks around nakago-hitu may be close to Aizu-Shoami. 1 Quote
Gunome Posted January 23, 2021 Author Report Posted January 23, 2021 Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't thought to Aizu Shoami school because the workmanship is not so close of they usual works, but why not ?! Shoami styles are so large ! I will try to see if I found something similar or close in that school. Thanks again Quote
Yasaka Azuma Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 The Aizu Shoami school has the image of making only miscellaneous popular products. However, they also leave behind good works influenced by Nara School. Shiba-gaki is a design that I often see. Quote
Gunome Posted January 24, 2021 Author Report Posted January 24, 2021 I own 2 nice aizu shoami tsuba but for this one I didn't recognize the aizu shoami style, that's why I requested opinion. I notice the one you share has same "grid" design. So could be a possibility, but always hard to compare kinko with iron. Anyway thanks again for your input. I appreciate Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 I like the Japanese idea of driving out evil spirits with sardines - but I think my idea will drive next doors cats away as well! I couldn't find any Holly so went for a garland of Japanese maple branches. 1 Quote
Yasaka Azuma Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Dale bulldogs want to pat a head. This shiba-gaki is torn and has a wabi-sabi taste. The description says it's Bushu, but I don't know the truth because it's unsigned. After all, the search for accommodation for unsigned works is endless. https://www.jauce.com/auction/o451973490 2 Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Yas one sold last night - https://www.jauce.com/auction/p817342531 not as nice, the window is empty. I have pictures of 18 utsushi [including the one you posted and this one] Samurai must have loved a good cup of tea! I know of two sets of daisho as well. The set here is described as Bushu also, but has no signature - so it may be a guess. We already have one Bulldog to pat - if she would get out of bed! 2 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 I think we have hijacked this thread No it is not a Christian cross on that guard, not even an orthodox cross. Tea room windows? Seller is trying too hard - nothing wrong with what it really represents. [Yas, you are right she is a glutton!] Quote
Yasaka Azuma Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 Yeah, has moved away from the needs of Sebastien. My bad. 柊鰯図小柄 銘 大森英秀(花押)Hiragi-iwashi-zu-koduka oomori-teruhide(kao) 1 Quote

Expand Sebastien I have found a daisho set selling on Jauce with the same Sardine and Holly theme as yours. https://www.jauce.com/auction/j716876105 I hope the images are of some use. 1 Quote
Gunome Posted March 20, 2021 Author Report Posted March 20, 2021 Thanks Dale, that's a great find. Moreover this daisho has a mei that seems to be Umetada. That give me a direction to do further research in the umedata school. Many thanks 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 20, 2021 Report Posted March 20, 2021 Sebastien isn't it a shame that the Dia has lost the fish head and some of the holly, otherwise they look in good condition. Quote
Gunome Posted March 21, 2021 Author Report Posted March 21, 2021 Indeed. It would be a great daisho if it were in good condition Quote
Gunome Posted March 27, 2021 Author Report Posted March 27, 2021 Hello, Thanks for pointing out Umetada school. I found this tsuba in wakayama, from Umetada school too. It show some similarities in the mimi and dot inlay. So Umetada seems to be a good call for my tsuba. 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 30, 2021 Report Posted March 30, 2021 Sebastien, I don't know if you are interested but there is a set of sardine menuki here. https://www.jauce.com/auction/547060970 At least they look like sardines to me? Quote
