bought this recently but haven't received it yet.

Just wondering if anyone comes across something like this ( besides being rusty )? I mean the " overlapping " of the design that fit into a " slot-like " depression onto the rim.............

Very unusual indeed. It gives me the impression that the original rim was removed and a new rim shaped, morticed on its interior to the points of the design, and fitted. Perhaps the same kind of technique as the Saotome Kiku types seen where the "spokes" are installed. The current rim is quite robust for what I would expect in conjunction with this design. Perhaps the original rim was damaged and there were steps to save the tsuba and reinforce it against subsequent damage.

All completely speculative on my part, and without any basis other than first impression.

Nice Milt, you just got yourself a pretty challenging contract to clean it!

i agree that this rim doesnt look attached at first but it is very hard to say without seeing it in person and in current condition.

I have heard about replaced seppadai in the past but never the rim.

At the time this work (replacing the rim) would have been done, would the tsuba have been valuable enough to warrant the expense and or bother of the replacement? Doesn't seem likely.

What makes more sense to me is that the tsuba was made the way it is, with modeling/undercutting where the design meets the rim.

Of course, what do I know? Grey
