PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Presented here are most of the known types of 2nd removable Haikan/Ashi/Hanger. Without doubt there are probably other types/variants out there, if you have one different from these it would be of great interest. The side hinged mounting type is particularly unusual and quite rare. 3 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2020 Author Report Posted December 12, 2020 Please enjoy examples of the early style tassels found on the Type 94, unfortunately I don't have the General grade example (please share if you have one!). The main identifiers for the early tassels are: Thinner straps Opposite coloured borders of the straps Longer Comparison of the early style vs standard: 4 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2020 Author Report Posted December 12, 2020 Both examples together on Type 94: 3 Quote
Brian Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 John, Let's try something I am trialing... Go into the Gallery above, and into the Military Reference Section. Then Add Images, and create a new folder. Because you are Gold, you can create folders and upload. Now create a new folder called Hangers/Ashi Now upload those images one at a time into the folder. You can add a description/explanation if needed on each image. Then another folder called Tassels. And the same. I am looking to see if we can create a gallery encyclopedia for swords, where people can put reference images that would because the standard reference for that category. Still playing with who will be what permissions. But I think it would be great for the military guys (tassels, NCO variants, mantetsu etc etc etc) and then also into the Nihonto section, where we can show schools or smiths or whatever. Taking it slow, but do you and Bruce and the other guys was to try and see where it gets us? Let's not go mad with hundreds of images just yet, but I want to improve the features here. 6 3 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2020 Author Report Posted December 12, 2020 This is a great idea, perhaps it should be occasionally monitored so the folders are decent reference material? I've made the two folders here: & 3 1 Quote
Brian Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Now we are getting somewhere. I moved the albums to put them into a hierarchy. So now you go into military...then choose a category like hangers, and then in that album we can create folders of different ones. It looks like it will work well, just going to play with permissions. I would like members to come up with ideas for other albums, but we'll start a new thread on that. It won't be limited to military swords. 1 Quote
Mark C Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Excellent John, Is there any standard/average lengths for the early and standard Tassels? All the best 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2020 Author Report Posted December 12, 2020 Average length for tassels is around 49cm, the early ones can blow past 56cm. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Type 94 Removeable Ashi That’s a nice collection Jon. There are some more examples on this thread: Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Here are a few of my additions, note that the longer general tassel (far right) has a chance of being a repo, it is different from the other 2, but it has more similarities to the other 2 real ones than the repo i have in my collection. Ontario_Archaeology Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Tassels are around 50cm Quote
Brian Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Matt, I created a new album for general's tassels and uploaded your pic, and changed the author to yourself. People can add a few pics and create a new album for other tassels. It seems to be working nicely and while I don't want discussions in the gallery section, it will be a nice reference area. 1 Quote
Mister Gunto Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Great photos, and great idea on the reference photo albums! Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 13, 2020 Author Report Posted December 13, 2020 In the General tassel you suspect may be a replica is the zig-zag pattern made from bullion or yellow thread? Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 It's a bullion thread, the quality is lower than the other two. I can take more close up shots and post them here or dm them if you don't want them digressing the thread 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted May 4, 2021 Author Report Posted May 4, 2021 Another variation I haven't seen before: 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 4, 2021 Report Posted May 4, 2021 That's cool, John! I had to look at the others for a bit to see the difference, but I see it. Quote
