ribendao Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 So this is the first time I bought a Nihonto without consulting you guys first. Its in a little bit of rough shape but only appears to just be surface rust. What do you guys think? Legit Nihonto? Do you think you can tell the time period from the blades characteristics? Do you think it will be cleanable. I paid around $560 shipped, so I'm hoping I didn't overpay by too much. Thanks! Quote
Moley Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 I'm no expert, but for me alarm bells are.. "Why have a shirasaya (usually specially made to preserve a blade after a really expensive polish) on something that is in really bad condition. Kissaki and Yokote scream out at me also. Bit then again = "An estate sale"... could it have deteriorated this much due to neglect? Would welcome comments from others if I am barking up the wrong tree. Thanks Gwyn Quote
ribendao Posted November 11, 2020 Author Report Posted November 11, 2020 Thanks Gwyn. You make a good point about the shirasaya and I can't think of a good reason at the moment. What about the Kissaki and Yokote look off to you? This was the only Japanese sword for sale in the auction and it does look like it has been neglected some. Quote
Brian Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 Definitely real and old. But in that condition...you didn't overpay but you didn't get a steal. Won't teach you much in that state. If I were you, I would flip it at cost sometime and look for something that shows hada and hamon a bit better. But it's not a fake. Quote
ribendao Posted November 11, 2020 Author Report Posted November 11, 2020 Thanks Brian. The fact that its not fake is the most important I guess. Ill hold on to it and appreciate it for a while then sell it if a good opportunity arises. Quote
16k Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 Yes, real deal. Appears to be ubu and slightly machi okuri although that nakago is in such shape that I wouldn’t stake my head on it. If ubu and the irregular mekugi ana are just irregular because of rust, shape could be Kanbun Shinto. However, the nakago also looks possibly Muromachi. The naked blade could help Quote
ribendao Posted November 12, 2020 Author Report Posted November 12, 2020 Thanks JP. These pictures are from the auction. Once I get the sword in the mail I will take pictures of the naked blade and post again. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted November 12, 2020 Report Posted November 12, 2020 On the shirasaya, there's nothing odd. Blades are stored in them, long-term. Quote
