Moley Posted October 9, 2020 Report Posted October 9, 2020 Hi Guy's, Looking to broaden my knowledge and searching for an "interesting" Tachi to study rather than Katana and Wakizashi. Due to current postal crisis would prefer sales in U.K. Can travel (If not put in Lockdown) Anything out there ? Regards Gwyn
Gakusee Posted October 9, 2020 Report Posted October 9, 2020 Gwyn, you ought to be more specific than that. A tachi would have tachi mei and ordinarily be made in Heian, Kamakura or Nanbokucho jidai. We are disassociating ourselves from the implications of the tachi koshirae for a minute, as that introduces complexities. However, many genuine tachi were shortened and ended up as osuriage katana. So you could be studying a “katana”, which once had been a “tachi”, but in its current state is missing its mei. So, if you are looking to study an “older” sword, you should say so, and preferably specify the school/tradition. Defining it as tachi might be too broad.
Babu Posted October 9, 2020 Report Posted October 9, 2020 This is true.ive a tachi that's been slightly shortened so the mei had been folded over and is now unreadable. It's off to shinsa next week. It's 71cm and was 85cm approx based on the mei position. You don't mention a budget which is always useful in bringing swords out if the woodwork. So what are you looking to spend? I've a couple I could sell
Moley Posted October 9, 2020 Author Report Posted October 9, 2020 Thank you Michael and Adam.. I am educated already thanks to your answers. Never thought of those questions... Not really interested in "Bling" koshirae but doesn't matter if in Tachi or Katana Koshirae. But not shortened too much. If in Koshirae, prefer "Subtle". A longer, curvier sword also preferable if possible. Adam, saw your Tachi off to shinsa, alas reacted too late . Budget ??? Up to £6K ????
