PietroParis Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 See this link for the eBay sale: Rephrasing the question: is there really a market for broken-off nakago? This must be the first one I've seen online (I'm NOT planning to buy it, to be clear!) Quote
16k Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 Could be a market if you have a big name nakago and a mumei sword... 😟 Quote
vajo Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 looks like destroyed by saw. I think the nakago was welded on a fake sword and it was destroyed by the customs. Sender got his sword back. 😂 Quote
b.hennick Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 I have one where the broken end is polished so that you can see how the blade was constructed. Ted Tenold had a collection of those and made a great presentation with them. 3 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 LIke Chris said, looks to me like it's one of those blades that was cut in half at the end of the war. There are a few around like this. Last one I saw was used to hold a koshirae set together. Ha Ha! I just realized the humor of the title!!! Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 You can buy these in numbers. They are from non-registered swords taken from their owners and cut by the police in length of no more than 150 mm (cutting edge). You can use them for polishing trials or to forge smaller knives or re-process the steel in an OROSHIGANE furnace. Usually they have been cut recently, and it seems the blades are checked prior to the cutting by an expert (NBTHK?) to be sure not to destroy a valuable blade 3 Quote
Geraint Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 Reminds me of a dealer I called in to some years ago who assured me that a sword had been looked at by the, "nakago society". At last I understand! 🤣 All the best. 1 Quote
b.hennick Posted October 5, 2020 Report Posted October 5, 2020 I have two that were made into Mekugi nukie (peg remover) 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 I've seen them used for cutting stalks and branches for the flower ceremony. If the Mei is well-known, then it can be an interesting conversation piece. As mentioned above, there are some really quite presentable sheath knives made from these. Quote
Kurikata Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 Just for fun, I have this "Tanto" ? which has been made from a broken wakisashi and with the end (A kind of kissaki) being reshaped. For which purpose ? 2 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 Bruno, I think it works as a TSUNAGI to hold the TOSOGU together. Better than wood. I don't believe it was meant as a gardening knife. Quote

b.hennick Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 Here they are. The shorter one has a Maru mune. 3 Quote
16k Posted October 7, 2020 Report Posted October 7, 2020 Thanks, Barry, that is great! Much better looking than your traditional Mekugi Nuki at least! May I ask where you got them? Quote
b.hennick Posted October 7, 2020 Report Posted October 7, 2020 I Got them at the Tampa sword show. A Japanese dealer was selling them. I'm sorry that I don't remember his name. He made them into menuki nuki himself. These two are from koto blades. 1 Quote
LLagrange Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 JP there is a guy i follow on Instagram who makes traditional style Japanese blades who has some nakago meguki nuki for sale if you are looking for one. I believe he operates out of British Columbia. This is his website, they are not overly expensive imo. http://islandblacksmith.ca/ http://islandblacksmith.ca/available-work/forged-mekugi-nuki-nakago/#/tab-description Quote
16k Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 Thank you Logan, I'll keep the link! Although a French member has offered me one, so I will save on shipping. I wonder how the customs would react opening a parcel with a piece of rusty steel inside! 🤣 Quote
LLagrange Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 No problem. And they might think it's strange but I'm sure they have seen all sorts of wierd stuff come through customs. I'm sure nothing surprises them anymore 🤣 1 Quote
MHC Posted October 20, 2020 Report Posted October 20, 2020 Hello all, I've seen a few of these chopped/cut swords for sale out of Japan, but none so far that would actually ship to the USA. The examples that I've seen seem to go for between $13 US dollar's to $40 US dollars, some are single pieces, some are a full sword that's cut up. I would really like to get my hands on 1 or 2 decent length examples, for experimenting on. Any leads on where I might be able to buy 1 or 2 would be greatly appreciated. Mark Quote
ChrisW Posted October 20, 2020 Report Posted October 20, 2020 I've got a wakizashi that's been cut in half, heavily rusted. Signature exists but I cannot make out the strokes. Cut was done recently judging from lack of oxidation. Quote

ChrisW Posted October 21, 2020 Report Posted October 21, 2020 Sure, though its only interesting as a curio. Saw it in a local shop, someone had recognized what it was and priced it for $20, so I thought 'why not'. Quote
Brian Posted October 22, 2020 Report Posted October 22, 2020 Why not indeed. I would have paid $20. I do have a few pieces like this, and even though they are not viable swords, they are nice to mess around with. Make a good utility knife too. Try some Evaporust on that. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 22, 2020 Report Posted October 22, 2020 Handy for Tsunagi (assuming rust is removed). Quote
ChrisW Posted October 22, 2020 Report Posted October 22, 2020 I suppose I could have it cleaned up with some evaporust and then tack-welded together for use as a tsunagi as suggested. Quote
MHC Posted October 22, 2020 Report Posted October 22, 2020 Or you could sell 1/2 of it to me for $20 and break even :}. Mark Quote
ChrisW Posted October 23, 2020 Report Posted October 23, 2020 Ha! Funny. Even if the offer was tempting, I wouldn't as I don't part out things. Though cut in half, it will stay together. Quote
