John A Stuart Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 Well, I just got back from Mishima where I saw the Masamune to Muramasa exhibit. I have seen some of these swords before but, it was good to see the Soshu school displayed like this. These smiths show an extra-ordinary skill in the yaki-ire process and their hamon and hataraki are fabulous. The steel available in Sagami must have a certain quality that produces (heresy coming, avoid your eyes) a certain hardness in the jigane. It is the hamon that displays the misty stars of the Milky Way the school is famous for. The jigane is a light sky blue to white colour and has no depth away from heat effects (hamon, etc.). Superb craftmanship all in all, but I prefer the Ichimonji, early Mino and others foremost. Heresy over. John Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 John, You, lucky man... :D Quote

Ted Tenold Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Now, now, mon petit fromages, let's not get too far off the topic. As you guessed, (and probably to your great relief ), French is not one of my languages. It seems that Muramasa is one of those smiths people either like or not. What I can say is that while at the NBTHK Taikai, there were two zaimei Katanas, and though their existance makes them very special, I found myself coming back to the Heianjyo Nagayoshi. It became easier to see the speculation of connection between the two, but personally, I thought the Heianjyo blade superior work by comparison. That said, there was also an absolutely gorgeous Nidai Muramasa Tanto at the DTI. It was marvelous. Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 Yes, I could get to love this school, but, not my preference that's all. Andreas, I tried to get them to let me download their files. The Pentagon would have looked at me less askance. I also asked if they might make me a cd copy. Yikes. No board members around, just an usher type girl, so, she wouldn't do something out of the norm. John Quote
Tokaido Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Hy John, thank you for trying to get those pics. They were lovely, weren't they? Sonds like you met the same girl at the desk as we did a week ago Greetings Andreas BTW: to find the museum was easy for me: since I 'm a lazybone, I took a taxi from the railway station Quote
