Could use help with identifying my sword.

Hi I'm new to this forum and new to owning Japanese swords. My grandfather passed away leaving me a bring back Japanese sword. I'd love to learn more about it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Also I have no desire to sell this sword. Its something I want to pass on some day. It would be nice to have some info on it when that day comes.

Bobby,

You have a Japanese officer sword (Type 94 or 98, can't tell without pictures of the full saya (scabbard).  Someone will help with the smith's name.  More pictures of the full blade, and close-ups of the blade tip and a section of the blade showing the temper line, will help tell more about the blade.

Whoever did the sanding to remove rust has already damaged the geometry; that should not be done. Please post entire nakago (bare blade handle area) both sides.

The tsuba (handguard) looks pierced. Not really rare, but generally a step up from the standard issue.

The nakago (tang) is not rusted and the yasure mei (file marks) are clear, mei (signature) crisp looks gendai.

Please do not try to improve any of the surface.
