Babu Posted August 26, 2020 Report Posted August 26, 2020 Is it too easy To say hieanjo ? Anyone know the motifs? Snowflakes? It's thin at 4mm Regards Adam Quote
MauroP Posted August 26, 2020 Report Posted August 26, 2020 Classic ranma-sukashi (欄間透) of Yoshirō school. Unfortunately all hira-zōgan lost. The pattern is usually referred as mogusa (藻草 - water plants). Quote
Babu Posted August 26, 2020 Author Report Posted August 26, 2020 Yes hira zogan is rather thoroughly lost . Do you think this by intent perhaps? Quote
MauroP Posted August 26, 2020 Report Posted August 26, 2020 well, I suppose that no inlay could sometimes be better than some sparse fragment Quote
Spartancrest Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 I think the lack of inlay gives it a tooled leather look that is not unattractive. The motifs are very well done with no real damage - do we even know if there was extra inlay? Quote
Geraint Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 Dear All. Looking at the edges of the channels where inlay was you can see in some places the marks where the sides were closed onto the inlay to hold it, so my money is on this tsuba having complete inlay, now lost. All the best. 1 Quote
zanilu Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 Dale If you do a quick search on google using "yoshiro zogan tsuba" as keywords you will see how they looked with all the inlay in place. I am pretty sure that Adam piece lost the inlay, sometimes ago. As Geraint noted you can still see the traces of the lips that kept the brass in place. Regards Luca Quote
Japan2112 Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 I like the look that Bernard's hitsu ana have - squared. Is that indicative of an age or sub school? Quote
kissakai Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 One of the indicators of an old tsuba but this as usual can only be taken as a guide Quote
Babu Posted September 5, 2020 Author Report Posted September 5, 2020 The unusual thing about Bernhards tsuba is that the zogan is not zogan it's been applied with leaf which is wearing off even around the circular emblem. The others are clearly brass overlay Zogan with the inserted circular decoration. Quote
Bernard Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Hello Adam, There was already a discussion about the zogan on this tsuba : Bernard D Quote
Babu Posted September 5, 2020 Author Report Posted September 5, 2020 So what was the general consensus because regardless of Fords explanations your is the only one I see that exhibits this trait. How can you darken pure brass in that manner? Quote
