Anyone ever seen a Yari like this?

I am wondering wether or not to bid on this one for re-enactment purposes but i have never seen a Yari mounting like this... it has no tang.... ??

Generically called a socketed spear. The Japanese did make them - they called them fukuro yari - but they are much less common than the tanged variety.

Well, for my Samurai re-enactment i dont need a really old one (or real) of course... ill just wait till i get lucky some other day :lol: ..

 

I have seen some reasonable replicas on the net, also of Jumon-ji Yari..

It is said that Fukuro Yari were useful in battle as they were easy to fix onto something like the end of a section of bamboo, for example, with no serious hassle. I've got two or three. You need to make sure they have yaki-ire. The blades tend to be shorter than 15 cm and not to need paperwork.

 

Glad you hesitated with this one! Definitely modern, made nowadays both in China and in Japan, and can be seen recently on sale in street markets. Never clearly marked as 'young' though. Fine if you need something for displays, I expect.

dunno... but well the price its at at the moment is way too high for a re-enactment replica..

 

PFFFFT it went for 102 GBP... silly..
