tonyadelaideAU Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Hi All I have had some great help here in the past with a sword I've been privately offered a sword in WWII shin gunto with some characters on the tang I'll probably buy it if its old Just wondered what the writing says and if it's a foundry commercially made WWII sword or older based on what is written? My gut feeling is it is an old pre-WWII sword. I have slightly limited access to it but it has a nice wavy hamon and the blade is reasonably good condition I'll post some more pics of it if I go ahead with acquiring it Regards Tony Quote
tonyadelaideAU Posted July 13, 2020 Author Report Posted July 13, 2020 I've also attached an image of the "good luck" message that is attached to the sword Tony Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Tony, next time, please post under Translation, but I'm sure someone will help. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Hi Tony, this is a wartime made blade made in Seki. Not sure if that is a good luck tag or a surrender tag. If the mounts are nice it could be worth it. 1 Quote
SteveM Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 濃州住源天秀鍛之 Nōshū-jū Minamoto Amahide Kitaeru Kore Need a better shot of the surrender tag. The surname name on it is 石亀 Ishikame It's a WW2-era sword. 1 Quote
tonyadelaideAU Posted July 13, 2020 Author Report Posted July 13, 2020 Thank you all for your replies This is a scan of the tag I can't get an image any better than this In regard to 濃州住源天秀鍛之 Nōshū-jū Minamoto Amahide Kitaeru Kore Is that maker's name and town? Regards Tony Quote
SteveM Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 私物 - personal effects (unreadable) 東砲兵会部(九)石亀 - eastern artillery (#9) Ishikame Can't read the first kanji because of the fold in the cloth. Not completely sure of the blue kanji after "eastern artillery". Yes Nōshū is a province in Japan, known as a principle sword-making region, and there was an arsenal there (or several) that produced WW2 swords. Quote
Nobody Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 I guessed the first kanji. 関東砲兵司令部(九)- Kanto artillery headquarters (9) 石亀少佐 – Major Ishigame 6 Quote
