Yes, that's what it looked like to me, crescent moon reflected in water perhaps? Quite a clever and elegant/subtle reference I think. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 22, 2023 Author Report Posted October 22, 2023 Here's a cool one! Bonji for "Manjyu Bosatsu" "Mañjuśrī (Sanskrit: मञ्जुश्री) is a bodhisattva associated with prajñā (wisdom) in Mahāyāna Buddhism. His name means "Gentle Glory" in Sanskrit.[1] Mañjuśrī is also known by the fuller name of Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta (मञ्जुश्रीकुमारभूत),[2] literally "Mañjuśrī, Still a Youth" or, less literally, "Prince Mañjuśrī". Another name of Mañjuśrī is Mañjughoṣa." Found on an Edo period Kinmichi blade with Kiku (lost the website link). Translated by @Stephen HERE. 3 1 Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted November 1, 2023 Author Report Posted November 1, 2023 Not fancy, but simple. I like it. Too bad the silver inlay has partially come out, but you can see the design if you look closely. Posted in the For Sale forum by @Francis Wick HERE. 2 Quote

Ford Hallam Posted November 19, 2023 Report Posted November 19, 2023 Gold foil on copper, from an aikuchi koshirae I once owned. Plum blossom on cracking/thawing ice. 4 2 1 Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 19, 2023 Report Posted November 19, 2023 Gold foiled wrapped ni-ju habaki I once worked on. Curiously enough the mon, when examined under a microscope was revealed to have been cnc machined. The three segments of the mon design are each identical even with a couple of minute 'errors'. 3 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 21, 2023 Report Posted November 21, 2023 This last one would not inspire me to put the sword back into the SAYA! A whole little story in a very confined space! Gorgeous! 2 Quote

SteveM Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 Looks like a Brian Tschernaga two-tone double-piece habaki. Inner piece is shakudō and outer piece is gold foil? (possibly solid gold, but quite expensive to make a solid gold outer piece nowadays. I know he makes such pieces. 2 Quote

I just bought it (and the tachi it was mounted on) from a woman whose husband picked it up back in the 70's, so very unlikely to be Tschernaga's work. 2 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 30, 2023 Author Report Posted December 30, 2023 The two-tone is new to me, but sounds like Steve has seen this before. Quite nice looking! Quote
