that habaki looks similar to some on this site

Dang, Dale!  We could add 2 more pages to this thread with the habaki on that site!  Can't tell if most of them are new (they look new), or were they refurbished?

Bruce, I think a lot are new - spare parts for rebuilds?

But even though I don't collect Habaki there are a few there that have some age to them and are quite interesting and desirable.

Thought that looked familiar,

Dang John!  How do you do that!?!?!  Even if I remember something from way back, I rarely can find it!  So, looks like Ed passed it along to Swordbuyer.  Nice to know the trail of it.

Hi Bruce,

I have only just discovered this thread.

There is one style of Habaki from Kaga area, that is Talismanic.

Its to do with a deep Alchemy known as Kuji - In that certain Bushi involved themselves in, in order to create Invincibility.

(As They Perceived it).

Rin Pyo To Sha Kai Jin Retsu Zai Zen is the usual translation of the nine lines.

Unfortunately it was kidnapped by lesser souls in the late 20th Century, and featured in low budget Ninja Eiga.

I would warn, this is a deep and solitary journey into the Pre- Modern Japanese Warrior Psyche.

It's way beyond my pay grade, but here are some links that may make you as confused as I am.

I've been studying this since 1976, and its so profound.

Enjoy the Journey.......

Hi Malcolm

Just had a read and as you say it would take a lot of guidance and study

It was interesting to see the hand and finger movements we have seen in a few martial art films

strange one piece

Looks like the craftsman was making it like it was hand-carved out of stone.  I admit, on first glance I thought "Hm, kind of crude and ugly" but after taking a close look, there's an incredible amount of detail in there!!!

Hand carved or chiseled stone is a good comparison. Certainly a bold looking habiki! It definitely caught my eye

Cheers!

Had a wakizashi that is in shirasaya with wood habaki as a part of the shirasaya, so it didn’t have a real habaki.

Mark:

I'm doing some research on wood habaki used during ww2. Was the blade showa era?

The habaki and tsuba were a one piece shirasaya mounting.  I believe the shirasaya is a more modern piece made by Mike Virgadamo.

A lovely one with Buddhist bonji - Fudo Myo-o - Wisdom King, one of 5 guardians of Buddhism.  Posted by @C0D HERE.  First habaki I've seen with bonji.
