barnejp Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 Hi All, I may have an opportunity to buy an original Hokusai Manga. What should I be careful of and looking out for? Cheers, Greg Quote
BIG Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 Hi Greg, may be it's more a sketchbook than a manga. Ask the seller for pics. Best Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted July 8, 2020 Report Posted July 8, 2020 Hi Greg, There are several impressions of the Hokusai Manga, which extended to 15 volumes, from 1815 to 1878. There are later impressions in both Meiji, Taisho and Showa era. The early impressions are woodblock printed, often in Fukurotoji format. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_books Here are some examples: https://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/851646?fbclid=IwAR03GnvVPxyMU4M3XhavsE2fJNZ9g1z5VQqFjnUVQF2CdEsjdoQ3lNPHgGg https://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/851648?fbclid=IwAR1fQQafBOFX2EWNXCTOakUgb3NpzFdCHGJDDyK4gYBBE9qCbktG01DuFmY Watch out for insect and water damage. 3 Quote
barnejp Posted July 10, 2020 Author Report Posted July 10, 2020 Thank you for your replies. The seller indicted that the prints are only in black and white. I guess that likely means the prints are not original?? Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted July 11, 2020 Report Posted July 11, 2020 The Hokusai manga were originally sketches made with black ink. Later hands may have added colour to editions, possibly to increase sales, but this is not how they were intended. Clue: It's all in the weave of the Paper. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 11, 2020 Report Posted July 11, 2020 It's all in your links above. PS Last night on NHK-E Satellite they were showing Kurara, Hokusai no Musume. Left me in tears. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7168760/ 1 Quote
