Bull McCabe Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 Hi guys, Can anybody help me with a translation of this scroll from the Russo-Japanese War? Came with the medal several years ago but I never had it translated yet. Any input very welcome and appreciated! Many thanks! Dave Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 That’s a fairly big ask, Dave, which for a number of reasons will take someone quite a lot of time. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 I agree Piers, probably about 6hrs work, with the wind in the right direction. 2 Quote
Tom Darling Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 The Order Of The Rising Sun 8th Class Medal. I 've seen them on Ebay, best I can do. Tom D. Quote
SteveM Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 "Order of Meiji 8th Class with White Paulownia Leaf" issued April 1st, 1906. It might be the precursor of the Order of the Rising Sun. For a flavor of what the text says, see the entry here, under "Classes" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Sacred_Treasure 2 Quote
Bull McCabe Posted June 12, 2020 Author Report Posted June 12, 2020 Thanks guys for your answers. Apologies if its a big ask, but I am really stuck trying to decipher it. I got the date already, the input from SteveM is new - many thanks. I am wondering are they standard and that just the personal details of the awardee is different, or if the diplomas were highly personalised. Looking at the award date of 1906, it is likely this would be a Russo-Japanese award? Again, thanks for any and all input, even opinions. Best, David Quote
SteveM Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 Its as personalized as a high school, or college diploma. That is to say, the only personalized thing on it is the name and date. The rest is standard. The left side contains the names of the issuing authorities and their seals. But really, it says virtually the same thing that is in the Wikipedia entry. If you absolutely need a translation, I recommend you contact Markus Sesko, who sometimes posts on this forum. https://markussesko.com/translation-service/ Edit: The medal and certificate is issued to (former) Private First Class Mikuchi Jirōji. It doesn't mention anything about a specific campaign or war. It would be reasonable to assume this soldier distinguished himself in some theater of war of that era, with a good probability of it being the Russo-Japanese War. 3 Quote
Bull McCabe Posted June 15, 2020 Author Report Posted June 15, 2020 Thank you SteveM for that additional information - appreciated! Quote
