Hello,

This is the second tsuba I've bought.

The design really appealed to me, it gives a sense of a dynamic scene with the lions hair and tail swaying, bamboo bushes, falling waterfalls, and even water droplets.

What are other people opinion on it?  I don't really have any information about it, if someone could point me in the right direction so I could research a bit that would be great.

Best regards,

Tom Hutson

I like your Tsuba. Its my taste too. Its an Edo piece, hammered rim. Nice with that different metals silver, gold and shakudo. I can't say much about the school because many of these tsuba where made from different schools at the time. The plate looks very rough. I would say it was rusted and repatinated but I have not enough knowledge to give a correct statement.

Thanks for your replies, the back does look like it might have rusted sometime in the past.

I'll check out Choshu tsuba's, thanks for the lead.

Tom,

if you look closely at your TSUBA, you will observe that the bamboo leaves are all the same, no variation in the design. The same applies to the waterfalls - a repetition of a motive and a bit lifeless in my opinion. The SHISHI was placed where there was enough space, but that is not what I think is a good concept of design.

Together with the deplorable condition of the plate as well as the decoration, I can only hope that you did not pay a lot for it.

Thanks for your comments. After having a look I think Nara looks like a very good fit.

It's certainly a bit rough around the edges but I don't agree that the bamboo leaves and waterfalls are all exactly the same and the scene appeals to my eye. It's good we don't all have the same taste otherwise it would all be a bit boring.

Best,

Tom

Tom,

don't feel bad if my comment seemed a bit negative to you. It was not an expression of my taste, but I tried to lead you somewhat in seeing what really is and not what you want to see.

I am sure you will understand better when you have seen many good TSUBA! It is a long way, and I have gone it as well.
