Hey guys!

This has been passed down my family since my Grandfather was in the Pacific in the Signal Corps,

I've already posted it on reddit to get some feedback, but when I google "Gunto" usually this forum pops up!

Just looking for any information, if it is legit and what the next steps are if the sword is legit, pretty much the "HOW, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE".

Google Drive (All pictures taken) https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NG8-u_LA2RPgpbgfordVvQwU-alyYtxo

Background: Grandfather was gifted this by a Japanese officer, most probably right after the surrender.

Kind Regards

You have a type 97 kai gunto made for the navy. The blade is real. Others will give you the translation. It’s a genuine sword but we need to see more of the blade to give more details.

Welcome Alexander.

Good afternoon Alexander,

It looks like a Naval sword, and it's called a Kaigunto.

People from the Military swords of Japan section will know quite a bit about it.

You might repost it there, to get better response.

Hey 16k! Thank you very much for the welcome! That is no problem, I can take some pictures of it tomorrow and put them in the drive!

Kind Regards

Mei reads “良重“ (Yoshishige).

Dated, “昭和十八年” (Showa 18 = 1943,  if I’m not wrong)

Ouch, just noticed, that it was already answered on reddit.....

Haha! Thank you very much for your effort!

If it makes you feel any better I read yours when I woke up!

That is so awesome! So I guess the natural progression is how much is it worth?! How do I restore?! How do I get papers for it?! I'm happy to keep it in my possession for decades to come!!!
