scrotty Posted May 21, 2020 Report Posted May 21, 2020 Hello All, I have heard there may be a qualified armor restoration expert in the US. I have a 32 plate suji kabuto that needs only minor restoration/conservation to the hachi but needs a major restoration to the shikoro, cleaning and stripping, new urushi and lacing and re-attachment. International shipping/dealing with Customs, language barriers etc. is always a headache, add Covid-19 concerns...I'd rather keep it in the US if possible. Would appreciate any referrals... Best regards to all, be well, stay well. Steve Quote
uwe Posted May 23, 2020 Report Posted May 23, 2020 Sorry, can’t help with an American based restorer, Steve. Quote
Luc T Posted May 24, 2020 Report Posted May 24, 2020 Do we have to conclude there are no restorers in North America? Quote
Shogun8 Posted May 25, 2020 Report Posted May 25, 2020 Do we have to conclude there are no restorers in North America? Not to my knowledge. Andy Mancabelli does restoration work and he sometimes returns home stateside occasionally, but he's mostly in Japan. Quote
scrotty Posted May 26, 2020 Author Report Posted May 26, 2020 Andy Mancabelli, that is the name I had heard. I suppose I just assumed he worked in the US. Would anyone have contact information? Best Regards, Steve Quote
IanB Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 Steve, What you have is a helmet with a shikoro that is made up from two different sources - the bottom 4 lames having nothing to do with the rest. Normally a shikoro of this type would be of 5 lames, although sometimes other numbers of lames occur. Trying to make a proper shikoro from the two parts will not I'm sorry to say, work - the lengths and curves are all wrong. What you need is a katchushi to make you three new lames. scrotty Posted June 2, 2020 Author Report Posted June 2, 2020 Thank you Ian, despite the news regarding the shikoro it is nice to hear from you. Hope all is well with you and yours. I suppose I'll ponder what to do. Best, Steve Quote
