Jefferson Posted May 21, 2020 Report Posted May 21, 2020 I am brand new in the study of Japanese swords. I have watched a couple of documentaries on the history and the making of the steel. I find this very intriguing. I would very much appreciate some help with a translation. A date for now. In time I hope to learn to translate myself. Thanks in advance. Great website! Ray Singer Posted May 21, 2020 Report Posted May 21, 2020 Date: 昭和二十年三月 (March, 1945) Edit: I hid the mei as a spoiler below since you said you would like to learn to translate yourself. Mei: 俊光 (Toshimitsu) 3 Quote
Ray Singer Posted May 21, 2020 Report Posted May 21, 2020 The sword looks like a Showato. Are there any stamps on the nakago (for example, a square Seki stamp)? 1 Quote
16k Posted May 21, 2020 Report Posted May 21, 2020 Yes, a WW2 sword made for a type 3 shin gunto, fits the date. Could indeed be a Showato, but yasurime look keisho and I don’t know if the bothered making elaborate yasurime on Showato, except for Mantetsu. Others will probably add details. Quote
Jefferson Posted May 25, 2020 Author Report Posted May 25, 2020 Thank you all for the translation and information. I have purchased the sword and will have it in my possession in a week. I will try and take the necessary photos to learn and understand the history of this blade. Showato, gendaito, etc. I can't see a seki stamp in the photos I received from the seller. I will know more in a week. Thanks again. Best regards, Jefferson Quote
Rich S Posted May 25, 2020 Report Posted May 25, 2020 Jefferson Welcome to NMB. So much to learn is a gross understatement. Several lifetimes to even begin the basics. Welcome again. Rich 5 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 Hi, Jefferson, welcome. Whenever you post the Nakago (tang) photos, please place the blade pointing away from you, making it easier to read the Mei, from the top down. T H A N K S あ り が と う 4 Quote
