Ontario_Archaeology Posted May 18, 2020 Report Posted May 18, 2020 I came across this auction and thought it was interesting. I assume plenty of swords from smiths were presented to the Emperor. Might make for an interesting topic. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Katana-made-for-Emperor-Hirohito-by-master-sword-smith-Akihide-NBTHK-paper/254594531672?hash=item3b47044158:g:37MAAOSwrHheufYh 3 Quote
16k Posted May 18, 2020 Report Posted May 18, 2020 Pfuuuu! Chinese repro! No, seriously, truly outstanding! You can even see the Hada on those small pictures. Not my kind of swords, As I prefer simple things, and anyway don’t have that kind of money, but that is a magnificent piece of art. 1 Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted May 18, 2020 Author Report Posted May 18, 2020 How much do we know about these presentation swords? I imagine plenty of smiths would have wanted to present something to the Emperor as it would have been good for business.... Quote
lonely panet Posted May 18, 2020 Report Posted May 18, 2020 Anyone know the seller I check his fleabay history, and all his dealings are listed as "private sales". As to the Smith, I'm uneducated on him but I will say this num num num emoji But the quality of the photos is concerning me 1 Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted May 18, 2020 Author Report Posted May 18, 2020 This seller also has some swords from the Dawson book. I think i remember a similar auction a few months / a year ago...https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pre-WW2-Riding-Sword-Saber-for-NCOs-and-Soldiers-1868-1945-Tsube-Menuke/254594537716 Quote

Shamsy Posted May 18, 2020 Report Posted May 18, 2020 Not my forte of sword. The only comment is why on earth you would sell anything that valuable on fleabay? If he sent the sword, the buyer went into the yard and chopped some wood and watermelons with it, then returned it, he'd have zero recourse. They always side with the buyer. Better to go to a good site on commission or sell privately? 2 Quote

David Flynn Posted May 18, 2020 Report Posted May 18, 2020 John Grasso of NihontoAu, Had a sword by Akihide that looked very similar to this one. He was asking 50k Aussie. 1 Quote
reeder Posted May 19, 2020 Report Posted May 19, 2020 Akihide was top gendai Smith. Taught all of the Aki smiths in the “black dragon society”. Iirc a lot of the other top gendai smiths studied under him as well. Quote
David Flynn Posted May 19, 2020 Report Posted May 19, 2020 Brandon, Akihide wasn't the teacher, Shigetsugu was. Quote

reeder Posted May 19, 2020 Report Posted May 19, 2020 Brandon, Akihide wasn't the teacher, Shigetsugu was. Oops, mixed up Akihiro with akihide. Akihide ran the NTD, where most of the smiths’ names started with “Aki”. Akihiro and Shigetsugu were BDS. Quote
