stephan_hiller Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Hello, as we all (should) know nakago cleaning (removing the rust) is an absolute NoNo for all serious collectors, but what about cleaning the habakis and up to which degree. Old copper habakis can have a very nice patina but how would you clean it? Use choji oil only to remove surface dirt. Would it be okay to remove the patina and to have a shiny habaki or would that also detract from the value of the sword/habaki? Stephan Quote
Henry Wilson Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 A wise man once said to me (I think Richard T) why bother cleaning the habaki? I give it a rub with a tissue after I have looked at a sword but as far as rubbing away patina, another wise man once said (I think Jim Gilbert) we in the west are too fond of cleaning things..... b.hennick Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 I like to clean the inside of a habaki when I get a new sword. Often there is a buildup inside the habaki. I never mess with the patina on the outside. To clean the inside I use a Q-tip and some lighter fluid as the solvent. It is amasing how dirty a habaki can be. Quote
