autodex Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Hello How can one tell if the Yokote is cosmetic or just worn down? I have a o-kissaki and the I cannot detect any change in geometry. Was it common to apply a cosmetic yokote with the o-kissaki shape? The katana is from the 1850’s. Quote
b.hennick Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Put a tissue over it and move your finger over it from blade to point and feel of it bevels (slant down). Quote
autodex Posted April 13, 2020 Author Report Posted April 13, 2020 I can feel a slight difference slightly beyond the yokote where is appears to slant down into the kissaki . I guess it is very subtle Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 14, 2020 Report Posted April 14, 2020 Photos will help. Hard to picture an o-kissaki without a yokote to establish the boundary. 1 Quote
autodex Posted April 14, 2020 Author Report Posted April 14, 2020 Please see attached, it hards to determine if its cosmetic or not the downward slope is very subtle 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 14, 2020 Report Posted April 14, 2020 A nice, definite yokote. I like your o-kissaki, too. 1 Quote
Bazza Posted April 15, 2020 Report Posted April 15, 2020 Steven, your yokote is definitely not cosmetic. The mitsugashira clearly shows this - mitsugashira is the place where the yokote, koshinogi and yokote meet. Your koshinogi is well defined where it meets the shinogi and the yokote also originates at that place (I have purposely not used "point"!!). Can we see the nakago and perhaps you have an overall sugata picture?? BaZZa. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 15, 2020 Report Posted April 15, 2020 Are you saying that you cannot feel (with your finger) a change in geometry at the Yokote itself? How far away from the Yokote can you feel the change in direction. There is (?) the beginning of a ghost of a brighter parallel line in your photo just ‘beyond’ the Yokote. Is that what you are referring to? Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 15, 2020 Report Posted April 15, 2020 You're right, Piers. Missed that the first time, & wonder if it's "feelable?" Quote
Blazeaglory Posted April 15, 2020 Report Posted April 15, 2020 If it was "added" at a later date it's a very good job I too would like to see more pics! Quote
autodex Posted April 15, 2020 Author Report Posted April 15, 2020 Hello I would say a few millimeters past the parallel line is where the slight downward slope begins 1 Quote
Bazza Posted April 15, 2020 Report Posted April 15, 2020 Hello I would say a few millimeters past the parallel line is where the slight downward slope begins And yet, looking again at your photo Steven, it seems to me that the koshinogi extends further back toward the nakago. This would be the prime determinant of where the yokote should be if the polisher was up to the job. And without the sword in hand to see the subtleties that is where i will rest my case. BaZZa.
