Surfson Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 So even though I'm moving, this shelter in place directive has me stir crazy. Thought I would post photos of a couple of recent acquisitions. Any and all comments and opinions are welcome. Cheers, Bob 15 Quote
Peter Bleed Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 These are terrific. Please tell us about them. Where did you discover them? Peter 1 Quote
DirkO Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Followed both auctions, good price for good items! Quote
peterd Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 The second one reminds me of kinko umetada ? 1 Quote
Surfson Posted April 1, 2020 Author Report Posted April 1, 2020 Any other guesses about school or maker? Quote
Lee Bray Posted April 1, 2020 Report Posted April 1, 2020 First one suggests Hirata Hikozo in style but work suggests school work or later utsushi. Second, I agree with Peter that it looks like Umetada Myoju but again, while this work appears well done, it's not as bold or well executed as Myoju, so would have to plumb for school work or later ustsushi. Both very nice though and I'm also a fan of copper or brass tsuba. Quote
Surfson Posted April 1, 2020 Author Report Posted April 1, 2020 Well done gentlemen. The first one has NBTHK Hozon papers to Den Hirata and the second one has NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers to Umetada. The tipoff on the first one would have to be the odawara fukurin I would think, and the tipoff on the second one is the distinct inlay style. Cheers, Bob Quote
suketaka Posted April 1, 2020 Report Posted April 1, 2020 Hello Robert, interesting to see the paper for the Hirata.... Quote
Surfson Posted April 1, 2020 Author Report Posted April 1, 2020 hi Michael. In the middle of a move. It just says Mumei. Den Hirata. The rest is description of design. Cheers, Bob Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 Second tsuba looks like Heianjo translated to copper - great! Quote
Surfson Posted April 2, 2020 Author Report Posted April 2, 2020 Interesting Ken. I am not an expert on Umetada, though I do have several. They really vary widely from interesting and unusual iron to soft metal with wild inlays. I have always liked the style where they do inlay that looks like brush strokes (I'm sure there is a specific name for the style). This one has that but also has those well carved three dimensional leaves that I think you are referring to. It just happens that I have a lot of Heianjo, having bought many from Gary Murtha in the past. I do love their work too. Quote
Marius Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 Deleted, since the NBTHK has settled the matter. Quote
Surfson Posted April 2, 2020 Author Report Posted April 2, 2020 Marius, do you think that the first is not even Hirata? Have you seen a odawara fukurin added later to tsuba that were not in the school? In hand it doesn't appear to be clumsy, but this is an interesting thought to consider and you may well be right. Quote
Surfson Posted April 2, 2020 Author Report Posted April 2, 2020 Again, Marius, are you saying that the tsuba is not Hirata, just the fukurin? Quote
Marius Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 Robert, the NBTHK settled the matter. PM sent to you. Quote
Kurikata Posted May 4, 2020 Report Posted May 4, 2020 Found this for the second Tsuba (Bonham's March 2008) 1 Quote
Brian Posted May 4, 2020 Report Posted May 4, 2020 More I see of that one, the more I love it.Bob, you can leave me that one in your will Quote
Surfson Posted May 4, 2020 Author Report Posted May 4, 2020 Wow Bruno, that appears to be the same tsuba. And somehow it found its way to Japan from there and then on to the Yahoo auction. Funny circulation. Brian, I will do that. Cheers, Bob Quote
