Hector_A Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 This is a picture of tsukamaki where the menuki are replaced with knots. Does anyone know what type of tsukamaki this is and how it is done ? Merci. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 Hector, you could ask Artur Drogamiecza (here on the NMB forums) or Thomas Buck (http://www.tsukamaki.net/). Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 That's quite strange, as menuki are there to help position the hands, not just for decoration. Quote
Ganko Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Interesting in lieu of menuki, a knot in the appropriate location. Poor mans menuki? Quote
Guido Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Shikagawa-tsumami-maki 鹿革撮み巻 with yuidama 結玉, often seen on Tenshō-koshirae 天正拵. 1 Quote
Greg F Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Could it be for less weight or just a preferred look. Or as Tom said poor mans menuki. Greg Quote
Hector_A Posted March 6, 2020 Author Report Posted March 6, 2020 Shikagawa-tsumami-maki 鹿革撮み巻 with yuidama 結玉, often seen on Tenshō-koshirae 天正拵. Thank you Guido, your knowledge is impressive. Any info on how it is done, i would love to have a tsuka made like that. Quote
Hector_A Posted March 6, 2020 Author Report Posted March 6, 2020 Could it be for less weight or just a preferred look. Or as Tom said poor mans menuki. Greg I think it has more to do with a reaction on the previous elaborate koshirae style, tensho koshirae made as simple as possible. 1 Quote
Guido Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 Thank you Guido, your knowledge is impressive. Any info on how it is done, i would love to have a tsuka made like that. Not that impressive: I just found out that 結玉 is actually pronounced "musubidama" . Anyhow, I don't really know how it's done, maybe this photo helps: 3 Quote
Lee Bray Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 That's a reef knot, or sometimes called a square knot, if that helps any budding tsukamakishi. Quote
Geraint Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 Dear All. http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/30770-tsukamaki/ An earlier thread on this subject including some detailed PDFs from Jussi, it includes some detail on musubidama and this mock up, However I do not think that is what Hector illustrates in hi OP. That looks more like the end knot from a tsuka. Haven't worked it out yet......... All the best. Quote
